Shtager Outdoor present Art Sokoloff’s first solo exhibition
Shtager Outdoor is pleased to present Art Sokoloff’s first solo exhibition.
With architectural thinking firmly placed at the core of his artistic practice, Sokoloff applies a strict formal language when placing materials in relation to space and light with the aim of revealing hidden structures. His meticulously drafted geometric objects provide a calming counterbalance to the chaos of contemporary life.
Listing collected dust as a named component alongside MDF, glue and paint, it is unclear whether the collection is the result of a determined act, or a passive consequence of the structure being exposed to the elements – the artist’s determined decision or an observed inevitability.
In her exhibition statement curator Olga Klimovitskaya writes: “A line stops being the trace of a hand and begins to function as an edge. A mark stops being material and begins to read as light. Art Sokoloff pushes his means to the limit of what is necessary — the point at which a form either convinces, or does not.”
The artist surrenders control as he releases the works from the contained environment of a white cube into the unpredictable setting of a West London garden in late summer.
