Meet UK’s MOST recyclable vacuum cleaner scaling from the home-shores to the US
No matter how much of a dent the pandemic has caused to the start of the decade, the 2020s will ultimately remain the decade of the ‘green revolution’. In the fight against climate change, each and every facet of our lives is set to be evolved by the desire to halt, and reverse the crippling impacts on the planet. These desires have challenged politicians and businesses across the globe, with ethical sentiments taking centre stage on the UK’s investment platforms. Indeed, new research from London-based private equity firm, IW Capital, has unveiled that 45% of the UK’s private investor population, are actively looking to back green and sustainable companies in 2021.
Domestic and household appliances currently stand as one of the worst offenders when it comes to impacting the environment. The value of domestic e-waste accounts for an estimated £50 billion every year globally, of which 1.5 million tonnes of electronic waste is generated by the UK each year. During the pandemic, the sale of white goods and domestic appliances has skyrocketed; sales for the these goods in the first quarter of 2020 topped £1 billion – an increase of 2.5% on figures recorded in 2019. But all too many of these goods will end up being thrown away, adding to the e-waste crisis and unnecessarily costing consumers hundred of pounds.
Whilst the pandemic has presented a huge incentive for investment opportunities within the white goods and domestic appliance market, there is seemingly a scarcity of businesses available for investors to back with green credentials; until now.
Ending the epidemic of appliances that are built-to-break
In response to the sheer quantity of domestic appliances across the world being discarded into landfill, British start-up Lupe Technology, devised by former Dyson engineers, is challenging the status quo of popular consumer goods by creating a premium product developed to be a vacuum-cleaner for life. Lupe’s Pure Cordless vacuum is crafted from recyclable plastic and delivers high performance whilst far outliving the expected shelf-life for typical household appliances. In the event a part does break, each individual small part of Lupe’s product is fully replaceable.
Lupe Technology is also very aware of the carbon footprint mass consumer household appliances have so in order to try and counteract this they are offsetting carbon for the lifecycle of each model sold, with the aim of becoming carbon negative during 2023.
As British consumers continue their drive towards making their home as green as possible, new national research from Lupe Technology has shown that 53% of Brits believe that environmentally friendly initiatives now have a greater influence over the brands they buy from. These sentiments are shared globally, and in turn has helped the business scale successfully in the US. 50% of Lupe Technology’s exports are now to the US, having grown exponentially since launch last year. If more investment was directed towards start-ups with a green conscious, there is a potential for British businesses to be at the epicentre of a global green boom.
Pablo Montero, co-founder of Lupe, commented on the qualities of the Pure Cordless that were motivated by a desire to build sustainable products.
“The Pure Cordless is the domestic appliance designed not just to shake-up the vacuum market but the entire home technology arena. We have strived to make a product as reliable and long-lasting as possible and hope consumers understand our mission to make technology stand the test of time. We want to help keep appliances out of landfill and perform as well as they did on day one for longer.
When designing the Pure Cordless, we had two core values; class-leading performance and longevity. The launch has represented the realisation of this and six years of hard work to make the best possible cordless vacuum available today while thinking about our environmental footprint. This is a product that has been designed to change our attitudes towards consumable electronics and home appliances. “
