Tottenham charity boosted by Amazon donation
A Tottenham charity supporting care-affected girls and women has received a £5,000 donation following nominations of support from employees at Amazon’s head office in Shoreditch.
The donation was made to Sister System, a charity that supports young, care-affected women aged 13-24 to ensure they have access to development, employment and social opportunities. Support services provided by the charity include therapeutic mentoring, nationally accredited courses, a range of workshops and access to career coaching and a community of other ‘sisters.’ The charity also runs five empowerment programmes, including peer mentoring, self-development workshops and networking opportunities.
The donation from Amazon will go towards the charity’s empowerment Fund which supports girl’s basic physical wellness through food, hygiene vouchers, travel vouchers and essential items to help them get through winter and the cost-of-living crisis.
Speaking on the donation, Andrea Ravnik, Amazon in the Community UK Lead, said:
“Sister System is an important charity in the Tottenham community, providing opportunities for many young women as they develop and work towards independence. The team at Amazon in Shoreditch is a big supporter of the charity’s ethos and it’s a pleasure to provide this donation for Sister System’s staff and volunteers.”
Amy Goodman at Sister System added:
“As a small grassroots charity, receiving a donation from a company like Amazon made us feel valued within our local community and wider society, demonstrating that they do really care about supporting us to empower the most marginalised girls and young women in London.”
Community donations are one of several ways in which Amazon supports the communities in and around its operating locations across the UK. Amazon provides students, teachers and parents with free computer science and STEM education programmes and has teamed up with charity partner Magic Breakfast to deliver more than six million healthy breakfasts to children at risk of hunger in disadvantaged areas of the country.
