Anyone’s Ghost Unveils Debut Record “Necromancer”
This EP feels like mist, it feels like mourning and solemnity, the heaviness of coming to your own thoughts at the end of the day, and yet it feels like escape. Poetic and unrelenting in its beauty and haunting I know this EP is one I will return to time and time again,” – @wherearethegirlbands review of ‘A Good Winter in June”
“A Good Winter in June may be a record made for the colder months, but listening to it at the peak of summer, I felt completely absorbed into its own universe, transfixed by this marvel of an EP. Anyone’s Ghost make an incredibly bold statement with this sublime record. Like all good ghost stories, it lingers in the memory long after it ends, and invites you back for more.” – QSO Media
“From the piano chords, Anyone’s Ghost’s ethereal vocals draw listeners into a contemplative soundscape. The delicate instrumentation alongside the haunting vocal delivery, creates an understated yet powerful atmosphere” – The Indiependent’s review of ‘More Than I Care to Admit’
“Usually wielding an acoustic guitar and a multitude of effects pedals, Wanda is able to capture attention from the get-go with haunting vocals, melodic guitar work and a soundscape formed with intensity and emotion.” – Top 40 Charts
Anyone’s Ghost came to fruition as a project following Wanda Roslyn performing as a solo artist on Manchester’ folk acoustic scene met Michael Webster (of Bread Records) in 2020. The musical partnership blossomed, and the addition of Max Macmillian was a natural move as he became integral to the performance process in 2022.
Anyone’s Ghost are: Wanda Roslyn (writer, vocal, guitar, keys), with the accompaniment of live/studio band members Michael Webster (vocals, guitar, production) and Max Macmillan (guitar, keys, vocals).
“Necromancer is an album about anger, allowing yourself to feel resentment and think thoughts you know are unkind but feeling the pain anyway. It is also an album about love and friendship, the formative power of queer friendships as an escape from hurt and an aggressive world.”
Following on from the success of her debut EP ‘A Good Winter in June’, Anyone’s Ghost is set to release their debut record “Necromancer”. “Necromancer” was preceded by the release of two singles – the vulnerable and evocative ‘More Than I Care To Admit’, and the haunting stylings of ‘Molotov’. Staying with these atmospheric soundscapes, the new album, which boasts an impressive fourteen tracks, explores a multitude of emotions from anger, overwhelming resentment, love and friendship all the while offering an escape from an aggressive and hurt world.
‘More Than I Care To Admit’ boasts Wanda’s softer side and offers and explorative dive into long distance friendship and features a gorgeous sonic ambience. Juxtaposing, ‘Molotov’ delves into a narrative of jealousy and resentment, the overwhelming heartache of which can be heard in Wanda’s crooning vocals. The track details and unfolds the feeling of loving someone so much, that you’d be willing to hurt them to maintain the closeness and relationship with them. Ultimately, having so much longing in your life that pain might be the best and only way of projecting it. The haunting guitar lines ring reminiscent of Elliot Smith and vocals wouldn’t find themselves amiss in Phoebe Bridger’s repetoir.
Speaking on the album, Wanda notes: “This album is an embrace of a stronger sound I always envisioned my music adopting when I used to daydream about how an Anyone’s Ghost record might sound. Authenticity and emotion is important to me, and the additional instrumentation Max and Michael provide is the perfect soundscape for a record that is a time capsule of a deeply painful and invigorating time of my life. Writing these songs over the last few years has given me an outlet for hurt, a place to explore feeling without shame.”
From the haunting soundscapes of ‘Interlude II’, soft vocalisations of ‘Killed For You’ and lush croonings of ‘New Brunswick’, “Necromancer” takes its place of Anyone’s Ghost’s most mature and developed project to date. The album weaves between a plethora of emotions; escapism (‘New Brunswick’), longing (‘4:06’), betrayal (‘Killed For You’) resentment and regret (‘Ancestor’), and ultimately gives a personal tour of Wanda’s psyche, experiences and journey through life so far.
The record also features overt novel influences, from ‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt, which notes on grief and emotional abuse, and album closer ‘Lux Lisbon’ – one of the sisters from Jeffrey Eugenides’ ‘Virgin Suicides’ – who finds comfort in feeling desired by others.
“What are you doing here, honey? You’re not even old enough to know how bad life
gets.”
And it was then Cecilia gave orally what was to be her only form of suicide note, and
a useless one at that, because she was going to live: “Obviously, Doctor,” she said,
“you’ve never been a thirteen-year-old girl.”
― Jeffrey Eugenides, The Virgin Suicides
The release of Anyone’s Ghost’s EP back in 2021 gained over 20,000 streams on Spotify alone and was covered in magazines, featuring on many best of 2021 lists, and creating a connection with fans around the world. With T-shirts and tapes sold in locations ranging from the local Manchester area to overseas in the US & Australia. The explosion generated by Wanda’s music has established Bread Records as a label to watch for exciting and unique artists.
Bread Records have been working across the last few years hosting gigs, putting out releases and promoting new artists. With even more planned for 2023, the label is becoming a cornerstone of the Manchester music scene.
