The 35p hack to fix car scratches

Car owners are being told of nifty hacks to remove unwanted scratch marks from their vehicles.

Motoring experts from LeaseCar.uk have named seven DIY car scratch hacks to prevent spending a fortune at the garage.

There are many unexpected items drivers already own that could help them fix pesky scratches.

Toothpaste, nail varnish and shoe polish are all household items recommended by the experts for buffing out scratches.

Tim Alcock, a motoring expert from LeaseCar.uk said: “Not all car scratches need to be fixed by professionals as they can be easily fixed with some simple DIY.

“Using nail varnish or shoe polish is a great way to disguise minor scratches. Other options like toothpaste and spray paint are genius hacks for trying to buff out scratches and make them disappear.

“Make sure to only use a small amount of products like nail varnish and vinegar, as they could cause damage to the paintwork if used too often or in large quantities. Use small amounts at a time and make sure to not leave it on the paint for too long before wiping or buffing it off.

“Buffing out scratches may take a few tries to remove them fully, but the end result will help save drivers a lot of money in the long run.”

Here are seven hacks to get rid of car scratches:

1. Toothpaste

This is a commonly known hack for fixing scratches. Toothpaste works best on small scratches and should be applied to a clean cloth and rubbed in circular motions.

2. Nail varnish

A clear-coloured nail varnish can help to disguise scratches with just a couple of coats on the affected area.

3. Vaseline

Vaseline can help to fill in scratches to make them less noticeable. Ensure the area is clean at first and then use a cotton pad to gently rub the Vaseline into the scratch.

4. Baking soda and water

Use baking soda and water to make a paste and apply this to the scratch, rub this in with circular motions and rinse with clean water.

5. Shoe polish

This hack works best with cars that are darker in colour. Find shoe polish in a shade that matches the scratched car and give the car a good wash to make sure there is no dirt on it. Then gently buff in the shoe polish and watch the scratch disappear.

6. Spray paint

This works best for cars with a slightly larger scratch. Ensure the spray paint colour matches the affected car before applying it to the vehicle. Start by sanding down the scratch, spray paint it and use a clear coat of car wax to give it a professional look.

7. White vinegar

This common condiment mixed with water can also be used to buff out minor scratches for as little as 35p. Repeat the process a few times to get the best results.
