Londoners are the Britain’s biggest appliance bluffers, with 59 per cent admitting they pretend to understand how their household appliances work.

New research from leading appliance specialist Hughes Electrical also reveals that a staggering number of Capital cohorts live in fear of their smart appliances – with 74 per cent sticking to the same settings for fear of breaking something. This despite modern appliances offering a range of features designed to make life easier for busy Londoners.

The findings come as part of Hughes Electricals’ ‘Life Hackers’ survey of 2,000 UK homeowners, which highlights a gap between home confidence and domestic reality when it comes to getting the most out of everyday household tech.

The consequences of this confusion are costly.

One in three (34%) have damaged clothes from mistakes
One in four (27%) report food waste
One in five (23%) face higher utility bills from choosing the wrong setting
Over a quarter (28%) waste time re-doing tasks
Common errors include:

Overloading washing machine drums (37%)
Failing to pre-heat ovens (33%)
Not de-frosting the freezer (25%)
Shrinking clothes in tumble dryers (34%).
Maintenance gaps compound the problem, with one in six (16%) not knowing that dishwashers have filters that need regular cleaning, while one in six (15%) were unaware tumble dryer filters require attention.

Across the country Brits turn to manuals (43%), Google (42%) and YouTube (40%) for appliance help, while 42% admit to teaching themselves through trial and error.

Smart technology adds another layer of confusion, with 39% who own smart appliances avoiding asking for help due to embarrassment. However, 84% would be more likely to try smart features if someone explained it to them before purchase.

“Homeowners invest in sophisticated appliances but lack confidence to explore their full potential,” says Jack Phelps, Chief Operating Officer at Hughes Electrical.

“Our survey reveals a hidden crisis of self-taught users, embarrassed to ask questions and relying on using the same settings, leading to costly mistakes. Simple, accessible guidance could transform how people use appliances, cut waste and bills, and reduce frustration. At Hughes, we are committed to supporting this through free how-to resources, buying guides, in-store demos, try before you buy and rental options, and expert support. The findings arrive as energy costs remain a household concern and sustainability pressures mount. Unlocking appliance features could help homeowners reduce consumption and waste without buying new equipment.”

Hughes Electrical is a family-run business operating online, specialising in major and small domestic appliances, supported by expert service and aftercare.
