Met figures show that at least 168 phones were stolen each day in the capital last year, potentially costing Londoners a combined £61 million.

A total of 61,331 mobile phones were stolen in 2025, according to Compare the Market’s analysis of the Metropolitan Police’s crime dashboard – equivalent to 1,179 phone thefts a week.

With some of the newest smartphone handsets now costing people more than £1,000, the rate at which phones were stolen in capital last year could have resulted in Londoners losing up to a combined £61 million in 2025.

Last year marked the first decrease in phone thefts since the Met launched its crime data dashboard data in February 2022. But compared to three years prior (2022), almost double the amount of phones were still being stolen in 2025 (61,331 in 2025, versus 36,637 in 2022 – excluding January 2022).

Although the number of phone thefts decreased in London in 2025, this crime has increased by 54% since 2022. In total, more than 224,000 phones have been reported stolen in the capital over the past four years. Not all phone thefts are reported – so the total number of phones stolen could be much higher.

Nearly a third of phone thefts in London occurred in Westminster last year, with Sutton and Richmond upon Thames recording the lowest levels of the crime.
