Labour MPs know they are finished under Starmer, claims Robert Jenrick
Reform UK’s economic spokesman Robert Jenrick has claimed that Labour MPs in the Red Wall “know they’re finished” under Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership.
On the Mandelson affair, he told the Camilla Tominey Show on GB News: “I don’t know whether he has lied or is just grossly incompetent. Neither is good from our Prime Minister.
“If the best that he could hope for is that the country concludes that he’s just utterly clueless, a sort of passenger who has no idea what’s going on in government, then either way, he needs to go, doesn’t he?”
He added: “Lee [Anderson] and I both represent constituencies in the north of Nottinghamshire, surrounded by Labour MPs. They know that they’re finished as long as Keir Starmer remains as Prime Minister.
“But the issue to me, if I can just step back, is it’s not really this whole who said what, who’s to blame. Is it this civil servant that most people in the country have never heard about? Is it the Prime Minister? Is it the fact that we have a Prime Minister who is completely distracted from the issues that actually bother people in the country?
“It’s a sunny day. Hundreds of people are crossing the English Channel in small boats. If you go to fill up your car at a service station today, you might be charged two quid for a litre of diesel. You’ve got jobs being lost left, right and centre because of crazy energy prices and the economic climate that’s been created by Rachel Reeves.
“What is Parliament going to be debating this week? It’s the ins and outs of how the Prime Minister appointed the best friend of the world’s most notorious pedophile to be our ambassador.
“Now obviously it matters getting to the truth of what actually happened. But the real problem here is that the government is completely paralysed when the country is in a total mess, and Reform is not interested in the Westminster games, the charade that’s going to happen next week.
“What we care about is getting a government in place as quickly as possible. That is going to get to the heart of the real issues.”
On Reform UK’s political ambitions, he said: “Let’s see what happens on May the seventh. Invite me back onto your show afterwards. I predict that the results on that day will be seismic.
“This will be an absolutely unprecedented moment in British political history. You have to go back to the Liberal Party’s disappearance and being eclipsed by the Labour Party at the beginning of the 20th century.
“And perhaps in many respects, this is even bigger than that, because that was linked to the war, the trade union movement, you name it. Reform, after May the seventh will be the only truly national party. We’ll be winning in big cities, in rural areas, in Scotland, Wales and England.”
