For the woman who looks beneath the surface and finds beauty in craftmanship and industrial heritage and stories held within old walls, Łódź is a revelation, a city that rewards depth over speed, and asks only that you give it the time it deserves.

Pronounced ‘Woodge’ and 75 minutes from Warsaw by train, Łódź is far from your typical European city break and one of the most surprising discoveries in Central Europe right now. A former textile powerhouse, the city has spent the last two decades turning its vast 19th-century factory buildings into galleries, design studios, rooftop bars and restaurants, and the result feels genuinely unlike anywhere else.

Three days gives you ample time to complete the trail, alongside opportunities to sample dining from the fusion Franco-Polish restaurant Fatamorgana at the creative Ksiezy Młyn district, serving up native dishes like the goat curd dumpling and the ‘Lodz Reservoir’ stuffed roast beef; and modern Polish dishes from Przy Kominie at Monopolis, a revitalised former vodka factory.

Manufaktura: a revitalised complex of industrialist Izrael Poznański, now home to one of Central Europe’s leading modern art museums with major works by Polish female artists including Katarzyna Kobro and Magdalena Abakanowicz
The Film Museum in Scheibler’s Palace: converted from the Łódź Film School, where the BAFTA award-winning director, Roman Polanski, once studied
The Central Museum of Textiles: housed in the historic White Factory (Biała Fabryka), it is home to the world’s leading tapestry collection, machinery displays and fashion and design collections
Piotrkowska Street: one of Europe’s longest commercial streets, lined with historic townhouses, independent cafés and concept stores
OFF Piotrkowska: former industrial buildings strung with lights, local designers and independent restaurants; for a nice evening stroll
Spółdzielnia Koneser: a cultural hub hosting workshops, and host cultural and social events year-round to support grassroots initiatives and local creators
