As Temperatures Drop to -16°C, Road Safety Expert Warns of Dangerous ‘Sudden Stop Scams’

As the UK braces for temperatures as low as -16°C, John Murray, a Road Safety expert from HD Claims is issuing a warning about two critical issues facing drivers this winter: the rise of the sudden stop scam and the risk of increased fines due to cold weather-related driving infractions.

The Sudden Stop Scam
Criminals are exploiting icy and low-visibility conditions by deliberately slamming on their brakes, causing unsuspecting drivers to rear-end them. This tactic, known as the sudden stop scam, not only puts drivers in danger but also results in fraudulent insurance claims and significant legal and financial consequences.

John Murray, a Road Safety expert from HD Claims explains:

“This scam is especially dangerous during cold weather, when icy roads make stopping distances longer. Drivers face not only the risk of financial loss but also the potential for serious injuries in these staged accidents.”

Fines for Cold Weather Driving
In addition to scams, drivers are being warned about common fines associated with winter driving. These include:

Failing to clear snow or ice from your vehicle: A frosted windscreen or snow-covered roof could result in fines of up to £60 and three penalty points.

Driving with worn tyres: The legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm is critical for winter conditions. Failure to comply can lead to fines of up to £2,500 per tyre.

Using fog lights incorrectly: Improper use of fog lights in clear conditions can attract fines of up to £50.

John Murray, a Road Safety expert from HD Claims explains:

“Many of these fines are avoidable with proper preparation. Drivers must take extra precautions to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and fully equipped for winter conditions.”

Tips to Stay Safe and Avoid Fines:
Increase following distances: Allow more time to stop on icy roads to avoid scams and accidents.

Clear your car thoroughly: Ensure all windows, mirrors, and lights are free of snow and ice before setting off.

Invest in winter tyres: These provide better grip in colder temperatures, reducing stopping distances.

Check your fog lights: Only use them when visibility is below 100 metres to avoid fines.

Use a dashcam: This can serve as valuable evidence if you encounter a scam or dispute an accident.

John Murray, a Road Safety expert from HD Claims says:

If you suspect you’ve been targeted by a sudden stop scam, gather evidence at the scene, take photos, and report the incident to your insurer immediately.

“Winter driving requires extra vigilance, both to protect yourself from scams and to avoid fines that can add up quickly,” concluded.
