Brits fear being parted from their pets as they start to plan 2021 holidays, research reveals

Millions of pet owners dreaming of a holiday as Britain eases travel restrictions are having their plans spoiled because they are worried about being parted from their pets. Over 10 million1 pet owners (62%2) say they feel guilty at the thought of leaving their pets to go on holiday, despite the fluctuating lockdown restrictions Brits have faced for over a year.

Indeed, the ever-changing travel advice and potentially having to quarantine upon arrival isn’t the only thing that’s unsettling holidaymakers, as 6.4 million (38%) admit they feel more anxious about the thought of leaving their pets to go on holiday now than before lockdown. With kennels and catteries set to be in high demand this year, it perhaps unsurprising that pet owners are planning who will care for their precious pets already.

Ensuring their furry friend will be cared for properly in their absence is of extreme importance to UK pet owners, as 12.7 million (75%) say they would cancel their holiday if they couldn’t find anyone to care for their pets. What’s more, the nationwide study conducted by TrustedHousesitters also found that nearly a third of pet owners (29%) say finding the right pet care is what they worry about most when making travel plans, followed by finding the right accommodation (24%) and being away from home (17%).

Angela Laws, Community Manager of TrustedHousesitters, says: “Separation anxiety is an experience that many pet owners wrestle with when away from their animals, and it’s undoubtedly going to be harder leaving our pets now, given the amount of time we’ve spent with them.

“Pets are such an integral part of family life so it’s natural to want them to have the best possible care when we’re away. If you’re concerned about leaving your pet to go on holiday this year, don’t let this spoil your trip, take the time to do some research into the best pet care solution for you and your furry friend and you’ll feel more relaxed when the time comes.”
