EACH-BOUND BRITS SAY GOODBYE TO SUMMER WITH A SWEET TREAT

Candy Floss, ice cream with a flake, cream teas – they’ll all iconic treats associated with the Great British seaside – but a nice slice of cheesecake is about to dislodge these classics as Brits enjoy the final curtain-call of summer this Bank Holiday weekend.

As the final Bank Holiday of summer approaches, research by The Delicious Dessert Company asked 2,000 Brits which sweet treats they’d most like to enjoy on a Great British day out. A slice of cheesecake with some summer fruits or a choc drizzle topped the wish list for a moment of indulgence with one in four Brits (24%). Donuts and Yum Yums were a big hit with beach-bound Londoners (29%) along with eclairs (22%) – whilst the Scots would ditch their beloved shortbread for an indulgent ice cream treat (28%). In comparison, the traditional cream tea was a Bank Holiday treat for just 15% of people and only 12% would opt for a carton of popcorn to enliven their day by the seaside.

In terms of where the traffic jams may be this Bank Holiday, the South West (17%), Scotland (17%), Yorkshire (12%) and the South East (11%) are the hotspots for a mini break or getaway trip.

And it may not be Mother’s Day this coming Bank Holiday, but it’s the nation’s mums that are most up for a sweet treat this weekend. Nationally, 73% of those polled said they would be buying their mum a delicious ‘thank you’ surprise for the weekend – and topping this list was luxury ice cream (14%), cheesecake (13%), scones (14%), eclairs (12%) and fudge (11%). Dads, in contrast, are in line for a more modest helping of shortbread (11%), fruit cake (10%) and boiled sweets (10%).
