More than a third of UK drivers (42%) are unaware their vehicle has a cabin air filter – a simple component that could help reduce hay fever symptoms, according to new research from eBay, the UK’s number one online marketplace for vehicle parts and accessories.
Cabin air filters are designed to block dust, pollen and any harmful pollutants from entering the vehicle’s cabin, essential for keeping a healthy interior environment for the 49% of drivers that experience hay fever each year.
Motorists are advised to check and replace their cabin air filter at least once a year, or more frequently if driving in high-pollution or high-pollen environments, yet around a third (35%) of drivers have never checked or replaced theirs.
Cabin air filters are often located behind the glovebox or under the dashboard on the passenger side behind a small trim panel near the footwell. Few tools are required, generally a screwdriver and occasionally a socket set depending on the vehicle, and can take as little as 10 minutes to replace. Despite the quick fix, more than half (54%) say they would lack confidence to do it themselves.
eBay’s My Garage feature allows drivers to quickly find compatible cabin air filters, as well as a variety of parts, for their vehicle by entering their registration, making routine maintenance easier than ever with prices starting from as little as £10.
As well as sneezing or allergy symptoms, eBay found motorists are also experiencing other consequences linked to blocked cabin air filters, such as fogging windows that are slow to clear (57%), unpleasant odours (32%), and weak air-conditioning performance (21%), which can then impact fuel efficiency.
Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations, Parts & Accessories at eBay, said: “Cabin air filters are a good example of how small, often overlooked parts can have a noticeable impact on everyday driving. While many motorists understand what these filters do, few feel confident taking action or realising the consequences of leaving them unchanged. As we head into spring, we encourage drivers to check and replace their cabin air filter to improve comfort in the vehicle.”
eBay found younger motorists are more proactive when it comes to maintenance, with nearly a quarter (24%) of Millennials having checked or replaced their cabin air filter within the last six months. By comparison, the proportion of Baby Boomers who have done the same is just 9%, with a further 44% having never changed the part at all.
