Epic Tales Launches “All The Better to Read You With” Setting Young Children Up For A Brighter Future In The New Year
Epic Tales, a preferred supplier for the government’s English Hub, specialises in empowering young people to read for pleasure, and is proud to announce the launch of their groundbreaking book, “All The Better to Read You With.” This initiative aims to help educators inspire children to read for pleasure at home and at school, setting them up for a lifetime of reading enjoyment and improved life outcomes. The launch will take place at the Bett UK event on January 24th at the Excel in London.
Reading for pleasure has been proven to have a profound impact on children’s cognitive development and life achievements. Research shows that reading for pleasure is more important for a child’s prospects than their parents’ level of education or socio-economic background. Children who read for pleasure outside of school are more likely to secure managerial or professional jobs in the future.
“All The Better to Read You With” was commissioned by the UK Department for Education’s English Hub, a support body for schools facing literacy challenges. The book addresses the curriculum obligation of promoting reading for pleasure and is designed to motivate children to develop a love for reading.
The book draws upon the expertise of storyteller Chip Colquhoun, who has two decades of experience in captivating young readers through storytelling, and Rebekah Owen, a founder of the Cambridge Training School Network’s Initial Teacher Training programme. The illustrations are provided by renowned artist Korky Paul, known for his work on “Winnie the Witch.”
Chip Colquhoun, storyteller and author, shared a success story illustrating the power of storytelling as a motivator for reading for pleasure. At an after-school event, a young boy named Luke was so inspired by Chip’s stories that he independently chose to start reading. Luke’s mother expressed her gratitude, stating to Chip, “You inspired him!”
Another case study showcased the impact of participation and engagement as a driver for reading for pleasure. During an online event arranged by the Museum of Cambridge, a 6-year-old boy named Jan, with English as an additional language, enthusiastically engaged with Chip’s storytelling. His parents, amazed by his interest, bought one of Chip’s books for ages 7+. Jan still read this with enthusiasm, significantly improving his English skills.
“All The Better to Read You With” is a testament to the power of storytelling in motivating children to read for pleasure, including reluctant readers and those exploring a new language.
As Epic Tales continues its mission to empower young readers and set them up for a lifetime of reading enjoyment, “All The Better to Read You With” will play a vital role in achieving this goal.
