As the school summer holidays come to an end, children’s bikes will have seen more use than at any other time of year.

From cycling to the park and family bike rides to summer adventures on woodland trails and weeks of regular riding can leave bikes with everyday wear and tear. At the same time, many children experience noticeable growth over the holidays, meaning a bike that fitted perfectly in spring may now need adjusting before the new school term.

To help families get ready for the new school term, children’s bike brand woom is therefore encouraging parents to carry out a simple “Summer Bike MOT” this August – a quick 10-point safety check designed to make sure bikes are safe, comfortable and ready for more adventures throughout the summer and into the autumn. Covering everything from tyre pressure and brakes to helmet fit and checking children haven’t outgrown their bike, the checklist highlights the key safety checks every family can complete at home in just a few minutes.

Inspired by the familiar vehicle MOT, the Summer Bike MOT helps families spot simple maintenance issues before they become bigger problems, while giving parents confidence that their child’s bike is ready to ride safely.

The Summer Bike MOT Checklist

Tyres – check tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure and inspect the tread for cuts, excessive wear or embedded stones. Correct tyre pressure helps children ride more comfortably, improves grip and makes pedalling easier.

Brakes – squeeze both brake levers to make sure they stop the wheels quickly and smoothly. If the brakes feel loose, spongy or make unusual noises, they may need adjusting before your child heads out.

Bolts – check the handlebars, saddle and wheels are securely fastened. Give the bike a gentle shake – nothing should rattle or move unexpectedly before riding.

Chain – wipe away dirt after summer adventures and apply bike lubricant if the chain looks dry or starts to squeak. A clean, lubricated chain helps the bike run more smoothly and reduces unnecessary wear.

Wheels – lift the bike and spin both wheels to check they rotate freely without rubbing the brakes or wobbling from side to side.

Saddle & Handlebars – children can grow quickly over the summer holidays, so check the saddle height and handlebar position still allow them to ride comfortably, confidently and reach the brake levers with ease.

Lights & Reflectors – as the evenings begin to get darker, wipe down reflectors and test front and rear lights so your child remains visible on late afternoon rides.

Helmet – a helmet should sit level on the head with a snug fit that doesn’t move when your child shakes their head. Check for cracks or damage and ensure the straps form a secure ‘V’ around each ear. .

Bell – check the bell rings clearly and is positioned where your child can comfortably reach it without taking their hands off the handlebars for long.

Bike Fit – one of the most important safety checks is making sure your child hasn’t outgrown their bike. They should be able to comfortably reach the pedals, handlebars and brakes while maintaining good control and confidence on every ride.
Simon Timlett, UK Country Manager at woom, said:

“A well-maintained bike doesn’t just last longer – it gives children the confidence to ride safely and enjoy every journey. Many of the most important safety checks only take a few minutes and can easily be carried out at home, helping parents spot small issues before they become bigger problems. Regular maintenance also helps children build good habits and understand the importance of looking after their bike.”
