GMB REACTS WITH FURY TO UNIONS’ NUCLEAR CLIMBDOWN

A key cross-union body failed to support nuclear energy today (Tuesday).

At the Scottish TUC congress, where member unions gather to discuss vital issues facing workers across Scotland and decide priorities for the year ahead, support for nuclear energy workers fell before it even hit the conference floor.

This happened because other energy unions indicated that they would either abstain or not support the GMB backed- proposal from Prospect.

The motion in favour of nuclear power had previously gained support from the TUC and Labour Party conferences.

Andy Prendergast, GMB National Secretary, said:

“It is a complete failure of fellow energy unions to understand the critical importance of the sector – they are pandering to a political class that’s increasingly detached from the real world.

“The UK & Irish Union movement was crucial to the creation of the civil nuclear industry. We cannot hit net zero targets without nuclear power.

“Despite this, other unions have lined up behind a green lobby that pushes unachievable alternatives which will destroy good union jobs and their communities, if successful.

“GMB is proud of our nuclear heritage. We recognise the valuable work our members do in providing clean energy – that in turn reduces our reliance on imports and exposure to swings in international energy markets.

“We won’t play politics that put jobs at risk. We will continue to fight for our members and their industry.

“Coming so soon after long awaited announcements on new nuclear builds, the decision not to back the sector by other unions is a kick in the teeth. But it won’t change our position.

“We’re pro nuclear and proud of it.”
