Gorton response officers presented with award for their brave life-saving actions

At around 11.20pm on 18 August 2024, officers were called to reports of a man armed with a knife attacking family members at an address in Gorton.
As both officers made their way to the scene, information emerged that several people had been stabbed and that the offender remained at the scene.
When they arrived, PC’s Maudsley and Ashworth were confronted with a chaotic and dangerous situation. Three people had suffered serious injuries and the suspect was still present.
Despite the risk posed by an offender, who was later found to still be in possession of the weapon, the officers helped detain him, preventing further harm to those present.
With the immediate threat contained and before any other emergency services had arrived, the officers turned their attention to the most seriously injured victim, the suspect’s father, who had sustained multiple serious stab wounds.
Using only basic first aid equipment, they assessed his injuries, dressed wounds, stemmed severe bleeding and provided constant reassurance, while also coordinating an effective response through detailed, clear and calm radio communications.
For seven minutes, both PC’s delivered life-saving care until firearms officers and paramedics arrived. They then continued to assist medical staff and provide detailed handovers to support the victim’s treatment.
Their decisive actions, professionalism and compassion are credited with saving the victim’s life.
The Royal Humane Society award is given to police officers to recognise their exceptional acts of saving or attempting to save human life. These acts often involve life-threatening situations where officers demonstrate extraordinary bravery and skill.
PCs Maudsley and Ashworth said: “We felt a real sense of pride when we found out we’d received this award. To have that acknowledged afterwards means a great deal, but we also know it wasn’t down to just us.
“It was very much a team effort. Everyone involved stepped up and played their part, and that’s what we’re most proud of.
“Moments like that remind us of how much we rely on each other and how important that teamwork really is in policing.”
