HCA UK performs first Robotic-Assisted Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass
HCA Healthcare UK (HCA UK) has successfully performed the first Robotic-Assisted Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (RA-MIDCAB) in the UK private sector.
The pioneering procedure, performed at London Bridge Hospital (part of HCA UK) using the da Vinci Xi robotic system, from Intuitive, marks a major advancement in the delivery of minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
This modern technique enables coronary artery bypass surgery to be carried out through small keyhole incisions and combines minimal access with the precision and control of robotic technology. Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, the procedure’s minimally invasive approach avoids the need to open the breastbone; allowing for a faster recovery, minimal scarring, and a shorter hospital stay.
Led by Mr Dincer Aktuerk, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, the operation represents a significant milestone in the evolution of cardiac care at HCA UK, and sets a new standard for complex heart surgery in the wider independent sector.
Mr Dincer Aktuerk, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at London Bridge Hospital, commented: “It’s a source of great pride that our first patient was able to return home just 72 hours after surgery, and continues to recover well. By introducing this robotic approach at HCA UK, we’re transforming lives with faster recovery and helping patients return to normal life much sooner.”
Powered by the Da Vinci Xi robotic system, this next-generation approach gives surgeons unrivalled precision, dexterity and visibility. Working from a specialised console, the surgeon’s hand movements are translated in real time to four robotic arms, allowing a range of motion and steadiness that exceed human capability. The system’s magnified, 3D high-definition view of the heart enables exceptional visualisation and control during the RA-MIDCAB procedure — particularly crucial in treating delicate coronary structures.
Building on its established leadership in cardiac care, HCA UK’s investment in robotic-assisted surgery technology reinforces its commitment to advancing clinical innovation and expanding treatment options for patients. The success of this first case paves the way for wider adoption of robotic techniques across HCA UK’s network of hospitals and cardiac centres.
The introduction of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery also aligns with a broader shift in the field toward minimally invasive approaches – an area in which HCA UK’s specialist cardiac surgeons have long been at the forefront.
Janene Madden, CEO of HCA UK’s London Bridge Hospital, commented: “This landmark procedure reflects HCA UK’s commitment to advancing clinical innovation and ensuring patients have access to the most progressive treatment options available. We’re continuously seeking ways to advance our capabilities and offer patients access to the most sophisticated treatment options available.
The introduction of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery also reinforces HCA UK’s position as the number one independent provider of private cardiac care in the country; treating more patients for cardiac conditions than any other private provider.”
