Huw Edwards: ‘This is a real tragedy for a significant number of people’, says Roger Bolton
THE Huw Edwards affair is a tragedy for many people and it’s unlikely that he will return as a newsreader, according to a former BBC executive.
Roger Bolton told GB News: “I think this is a real, real tragedy for a significant number of people…
“I think we should have very high standards, but I think we should be understanding about the fact that all of us, none of us are perfect, all of us make mistakes. And when it comes to sex, frankly, we all do daft things at some time in our life.
“The standards must be kept but I think we should be more understanding. I think there’s a real issue here. If you really believe somebody in a position of power is abusing that position within a television studio or whatever, it’s a very proper issue to raise.”
In a discussion during Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster, he continued: “It certainly isn’t career enhancing is it? In the role that he had, first he presents the main BBC news bulletin and you have the trust of the public that you are doing your best to tell the truth…
“I would think it’s extremely unlikely that he would go back to that, but it may be possible. You know, we don’t know all the circumstances, for example, if he were to make documentaries.”
He added: “There are two families at the heart of this, which are obviously in distress at the moment. Huw Edwards and his family, of course, his children, but of course, the family of the original complainant.
“It’s clear there’s something strange that’s been going on in that family and there’s great unhappiness.”
