Lib Dems call on Southwark to back EU free movement deal for young people to mark Europe Day

This Europe Day, the Southwark Liberal Democrats have called on the council to publicly support the proposed free movement deal with the EU for young people.

Last month, the UK Government rejected an EU offer that would make it easier for people aged between 18 and 30 to study and work abroad.

The Labour Party have also ruled out agreeing to any kind of arrangement if it wins an election.

In a letter to the leader of the council, Cllr Irina von Wiese said Southwark must publicly call on the UK Government and the Labour Party to reverse their positions and support the offer from the EU.

Europe Day is every year on the 9th May to celebrate peace and unity in Europe on the anniversary of the Schuman declaration.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Borough & Bankside Irina von Wiese said:

“Southwark prides itself on being a diverse and welcoming borough within one of the world’s most international cities. To stay true to those values, we must proudly state our support for the free movement of young people with the EU. While the Tories and Labour continue to move backwards, it is up to council’s to use their voice to champion collaboration with our European neighbours this Europe Day.”
