With the hand-crafted spirits category in full swing, recent years have seen a similar boom in the demand for premium mixers. Enter Lixir, the brainchild of Newcastle entrepreneurs and bartenders Jordan Palmer and Matt Mahatme who spotted a gap in the market for a brand of tonic waters to reflect the quality and variety offered up by the spirits category.

The diverse product portfolio of naturally-flavoured tonics spans five products: Classic Indian, Refreshingly Light, Elderflower & Lemon, Rhubarb & Ginger and Blood Orange & Cinnamon.

Variety has always been at the heart of the Lixir brand, with the founders’ core ambition being to champion the versatility of tonic water. Whether spicing up rum with Rhubarb & Ginger, pairing a bourbon with Blood Orange & Cinnamon or even lengthening white wine with Elderflower & Lemon, the range is designed to encourage people to rethink the ‘classic’ serve of tonic with gin. However, G&T loyalists will love the Classic and Refreshingly Light tonics which use a touch less quinine than standard, allowing the base botanicals of a gin to really sing.

With no artificial flavourings, sweeteners or added preservatives, Lixir’s tonics can also be enjoyed solo over ice with fresh garnish – offering the ultimate soft alternative to a G&T for those reducing their alcohol consumption.

Founder Jordan Palmer said, ‘Our bartending experience led us to notice that whilst there were hundreds of diverse spirits available, there was a serious lack of mixers to accompany them. We therefore set out to offer something new and innovative to the market and a year later Lixir was born.

Tonic water is rarely given its due credit as a versatile mixer and we want to demonstrate how with a range of flavoured tonics you can experiment and create various drinks styles using just one bottle of spirit. The products in the Lixir range each offer something a little different and can either serve as a subtle accompaniment or offer a more distinctive flavour to lift a spirit.’

This element of experimentation is mirrored in the striking packaging design which reflects Lixir’s vibrant and innovative identity. The eye-catching bottles can already be spotted behind the bars of multiple venues in the North East, as well as in some of the region’s flagship retailers such as Fenwicks.

Lixir tonics retail at £1.30 per 20cl bottle and can be purchased online at Gin Kiosk.
