London named one of the UK’s most expensive places for a pie
In line with British Pie Week from March 2nd to March 8th, Buzz Bingo conducted some new research to find out how your postcode might be affecting your eating out fund.
The data looked at the 50 most populated areas in the UK, and used TripAdvisor to find out the prices of a standard steak and ale pie across multiple restaurants and pubs. The results concluded that London is the second most expensive place in the UK for a dine-out dinner, with the average pie costing £18.21.
The average price was calculated by looking at the top 10 results for each area, filtering for 3-star and above pubs and restaurants only. The cheapest places in the UK are:
The UK’s top 10 expensive places for pie:
London follows as the second most expensive place to tuck into the British classic, with a steak and ale pie costing an eye-watering average of £18.21. The most expensive pie in London out of the top 10 is the Sun Inn, where customers can be set back a massive £24 for a standard steak and ale pie.
Surprisingly, London did not come out as the most expensive place for a pie in the UK, with Nottingham costing more than the capital. With the average pie in Nottingham sitting at £18.81, this is almost 60% more than the cheapest location, Blackpool. The small Yorkshire town of Huddersfield is in third place at £17.35, so if you’re looking for a pie in these areas, it’s best to shop around to try and find the best value for money. Kingswood (and Fishponds) and Milton Keynes finish the top 5, with the average pie costing £16.90 and £16.84 respectively.
At just £11.24 for a steak and ale pie, Blackpool came out on top as the cheapest place in the UK to fulfil your cravings, and is the only area in the study where the average pie costs less than £12. Blackpool is followed by Wolverhampton and Slough, where a pie costs £12.06.
Mark Fletcher, Head of Brand at Buzz Bingo, noted:
“When it comes to comforting dishes you can enjoy outside your home, a true British comfort food has to be a steak and ale pie. Yet, while this might be a firm favourite to enjoy in the winter months, it is time to celebrate with National Pie Week this March. To get the best value for money, though, it’s worth noting that there are big price differences across different regions (and even postcodes). There is no clear North-South split when it comes to costs, with Blackpool, Wolverhampton and Slough offering plenty of affordable options, while customers in areas such as Nottingham, London and Huddersfield are facing a higher cost to tuck into this classic. For pub-goers, checking local prices can make a real difference.”
