After enjoying festive family time at home, many people choose to mark New Year’s Eve with a city break. From midnight celebrations and family-friendly activities to spectacular fireworks, there’s something for everyone.

With hotel prices often peaking, busy event schedules, and high tourist demand, leading digital bank Monzo has identified which UK cities offer the ideal combination of affordable accommodation and unforgettable experiences, providing the ultimate New Year’s Eve getaway.

To achieve this, they analysed average hotel prices from 30 December 2025 to 2 January 2026, along with the availability of free public events such as firework displays. To gauge popularity, they also assessed online interest in the cities and their New Year’s celebrations. These factors were then weighted and ranked to identify which destinations offered the ideal combination of budget-friendly accommodation and New Year’s buzz.

The top UK destination for a NYE getaway
Newcastle was crowned the best UK city for a New Year’s Eve getaway, providing the perfect combination of vibes and value. Travellers can book a hotel for an average of £546.31, while those looking for a more luxurious mini-break can stay in a 5-star hotel for £656.94 or a 4-star hotel for £746.

The northeastern city offers many free public celebrations and lively nightlife options, giving visitors plenty to enjoy without overspending. Despite its standout affordability and atmosphere, Newcastle still receives lower online search interest than hotspots like London and Edinburgh, meaning it remains something of a hidden gem for those wanting a memorable NYE without the crowds.

Manchester ranked second for value, offering the ideal mix of affordability and atmosphere for a New Year’s Eve escape. With average hotels priced at £687.73, and luxury stays costing £900.70 for a 5-star and £733.60 for a 4-star, the city provides plenty of options without stretching budgets.

Visitors can begin their celebrations at the free family-friendly fireworks event in St Peter’s Square, where displays are launched from the roof of Manchester Central Library. Celebrations continue after midnight, with late-night bars and live music venues ready to welcome partygoers. High search interest shows that Manchester is a popular choice for NYE, while still offering good value.

London followed closely behind, largely due to its famous city-wide celebrations rather than affordable accommodation. While there are plenty of options for places to stay after the festivities, average hotel prices sit at £989.98, rising to £1,759.69 for a 5-star stay and £1,024.61 for 4-star accommodation, making the capital one of the more expensive UK options. However, London compensates with its unmatched NYE atmosphere and iconic views. Although the South Bank fireworks show requires a ticket, there are numerous free vantage points across the city where visitors can enjoy the display without the central crowds. With very high online search interest, London remains one of the most popular destinations to welcome the New Year.

Based on average hotel prices, the availability of free public NYE events, and online interest in each city’s New Year’s celebrations, the top 10 UK cities for a getaway were:

Newcastle
Manchester
London
Glasgow
Bradford
Liverpool
Hull
Sunderland
Leeds
Birmingham

Best European destinations for a NYE getaway

For those who fancy going overseas to celebrate, Monzo also analysed major European cities to uncover the best-value options. Helsinki emerged as the most affordable destination overall, with an average hotel price of £504.63 and two free public NYE events for visitors to enjoy. The city offers artistic performances, fireworks and celebrations in Kansalaistori Square as well as a second free event in the picturesque city centre. Cities such as Madrid, Rome and Oslo also ranked highly for value, while Copenhagen and Vienna were among the most expensive due to higher hotel prices.

Based on average hotel prices, the availability of free public NYE events, and online interest in each city’s New Year’s celebrations, the top 10 European cities for a getaway were:

Chris Mucklow-Norell, Head of Brand Marketing, from Monzo, said: “New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights of the year, but finding a place to celebrate doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Our research shows that great-value options exist both at home and across Europe, from Newcastle’s lively celebrations to Helsinki’s free public events. With a bit of planning, it’s possible to enjoy a memorable start to 2026 without stretching your budget.”
