London’s Climate Sisters and Siblings are bringing their ideas, creativity and climate leadership to the Barbican, as part of a national series of Climate Sisters events.
Taking place on Monday 23 March at the Barbican Conservatory, the London showcase coincides with World Climate Day, a global moment to focus on the urgent need for climate action and to engage communities in addressing climate change challenges.
The event celebrates the growing network of women and non-binary people taking action for climate justice through Climate Sisters and Climate Siblings, the feminist climate leadership programmes facilitated by environmental charity Wen (Women’s Environmental Network).
The London event features 28 leaders from Global majority communities as they share perspectives rooted in the Capital and global diasporic experiences.
Through film, sound and creative installations, works explore how the climate crisis shapes everyday lives reflecting themes including textile and fashion legacies, Black queer perspectives on climate justice, and the impacts of extractive systems on migration, land, health and community.
Roshini Thamotheram, Head of Movements and Climate Sisters Programme Manager at Wen, said:
“At the heart of Climate Sisters and Siblings is the belief that those most affected by climate change must be part of shaping the response. The programme centres lived expertise, knowledge and community wisdom as essential to building a more just climate future.”
The showcase is part of a wider series of events taking place across London, Glasgow and Manchester this March, highlighting the leadership of women from Global majority communities in shaping climate solutions.
The London event brings together the Climate Siblings of The Love Tank and the Climate Sisters of Akwaaba, Women’s Inclusive Team and Alas, creating a vibrant, cross-cultural space for food, art, culture and conversation. It features stories connected to Algeria, Nigeria, Somaliland, Bangladesh, Somalia, Malaysia, Sudan, Turkey, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
The event begins with a drinks reception and exhibition in the Barbican Conservatory, followed by performances, dialogue and a shared plant-based meal. Guests will be invited to take part in informal table discussions hosted by Climate Sisters.
