A Labour peer who wrote to the government telling them that Mandelson should not be the US Ambassador has said the Mandelson files are the end of New Labour.

Speaking on GB News Lord Glasman said:
“It wasn’t much, but I had a go. I do want to say just formally that was supposed to be a confidential memo, and it wasn’t leaked by me. Certainly I wrote it and I stand by it.

“It was so obvious when we were there [in Washington] I mean, remember [Nigel Farage’s] party at the hotel? And people were just walking up to me with their phones, showing me those photographs.

“I mean, it wasn’t really a very difficult decision.

“And then I went with to the Maga events, and people were just walking up to me with these things. So it was clear. But what we didn’t understand on this side of the pond was the enormity of the Epstein story.

“You know, it was a conspiracy theory. It was Q Anon and we don’t make decisions on those grounds. But the reality is that that was what we found when we were there, and we have to be patriots, and we have to advise in the right way.

“I mean, now we’ve got a very good ambassador. By the way, in that briefing note, by the way, Nigel, I suggested that they make you the ambassador.

“When we got to America, you were like a Senator there; even your teeth looked better in America.

“I think if we’re going to understand it profoundly, this, to me, is the end of New Labour. Peter Mandelson is one of the two most important people in our politics of the last 40 years. I don’t want to see him erased, cancelled, whitewashed. He’s a very, very significant man.

“What he’s done is terrible. He has leaked government secrets, he put pressure on government ministers on behalf of foreigners. I mean, he did all that. This is terrible, but one thing is it’s even deeper than his individual complicity. And this is true, I think, of your party too, and Nigel, I have worries about yours, is this uncritical attitude to rich people.

“You know, the it’s the job of government to be close to rich and powerful people and to lobby on their behalf.

“It’s way bigger than Profumo. Profumo was actually really about sex. In this particular age, this is about money and power and secrets lobbying.

“All of that [underage sex] is disgusting. We have that going on with the grooming gangs, and we have that going on at the top. This is sinful, awful, disgusting behaviour.

“But what I’m saying is this is also about globalisation, about, you know, rich people exerting pressure on the government. So do you remember, I say to people, do you remember the financial crash? Remember those days?

“And so it turned out that the banks were lying and exaggerating and cheating about their accounts. You know, there was a huge popular reaction.

“What’s interesting is that Mandelson was lobbying for the bankers. This is what he was doing.”
