Brits are set to drink their way through nearly 57,000 cups of coffee over the course of their adult lives, new research reveals – including 8,000 americanos, 6,000 lattes and 5,800 flat whites.

A study of 2,000 adults found that one cup is rarely enough, with coffee drinkers getting through an average of 2.5 cups of coffee on a typical day, while more than one in 14 (7%) admit to getting through five cups or more in a single day.

The research, which was commissioned by Lavazza to celebrate the launch of Tablì their revolutionary new coffee system centred around a 100% coffee tab, no plastic or aluminium capsule – found the average coffee drinker spends more than 92 hours a year – the equivalent of nearly four full days – making and enjoying a cup of coffee.

The first sip comes early, with most reaching for their first brew between 7am and 8am.

For many, that first cup is sacred, as four in 10 (40 per cent) coffee drinkers wouldn’t dream of skipping their first brew, with a further 16 per cent naming it a non-negotiable part of their morning.

The joy doesn’t end with that first sip either, as 43 per cent went as far as to say the morning coffee is one of the best parts of their day, and nearly one in five (18 per cent) even consider it to be more important than taking a shower.

When it comes to what Brits savour most about making coffee, 43 per cent said it’s a comforting part of their morning routine, while 36 per cent view it as a moment of calm and 34 per cent use it to prepare before they start their day.

Asked what makes a cup of coffee so special, taste tops the list (52%), but it’s the sensory ritual that seals the deal – with the first sip from a steaming cup (34%), and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee (27%) amongst Brits’ favourite parts of their daily coffee ritual.

Emanuele Pellegrino, UK & Nordics Regional Director at Lavazza said: ‘Clearly, we are a nation of coffee lovers. But whether people prefer their coffee short and intense, long and smooth or with milk, what matters is being able to enjoy quality coffee exactly the way you like it at home.

“We know that coffee is an unmissable part of the day for more and more people, and our goal with Tablì was to use our 130 plus years of coffee passion and expertise, to reimagine the ritual of making and savouring a perfect cup every time.

“This revolutionary system, with its 100% unique coffee tab, aims to retain the convenience and quality consistency of single serve but puts coffee front and centre, so you can see, smell and feel the coffee even before you start brewing.’

Coffee drinkers certainly have strong opinions about what shouldn’t go in their cup. The research, carried out via OnePoll, also uncovered the nation’s top coffee faux pas with sugary syrups topping the list of controversial additions, as 28 per cent think sugary syrups should be banned completely.

Nearly a quarter (23 per cent) consider very milky coffee a no-go and 22 per cent draw the line at whipped cream on top.
