NEW DIGITAL CONSUMER BILL TABLED IN PARLIAMENT TODAY

News reveals a new digital consumer bill has been tabled in parliament today. Under this new legislation, major tech firms could face the threat of multibillion-pound fines for breaching consumer protection rules.

Robyn Le Friec, Managing Associate at Mishcon de Reya and consumer law specialist comments:

“The principles of “transparency” and “fairness” have always been key in underpinning UK consumer law.

“The changing way in which consumers interact with businesses online has made it easier for consumers to be misled and taken advantage of, whether or not this is intended by the business. As a result, the law has become outdated and needs to be changed to keep up with the evolving landscape.

“The new fining powers afforded by the Bill are significant and businesses who are affected will need to take these seriously when considering how they engage with consumers online.”
