“Not one female artist nominated for Artist of the Year at BRIT Awards – are we surprised? Not really.”
The BRIT Awards are approaching and not one female artist has been nominated for Artist Of The Year 2023. I thought you might be interested in speaking to Jane Kenyon, expert speaker and founder of social enterprise Girls Out Loud which works with vulnerable teenage girls in the UK, about the effects decisions like these can have on young girls.
Jane Kenyon, said:
“This year, we are seeing a BRIT Awards with not one female artist nominated for Artist of The Year 2023 – are we surprised? Not really.
This is yet another reminder that women are being overlooked and thus young girls everywhere are being under represented and undervalued. This is an issue that we shout about every single day and yet seemingly our voices remain unheard.
It is vital that we celebrate and recognise the achievements and ability of women in society to empower young girls and stop the silencing of women.
Whilst not surprising, these decisions are infuriating and depressing and highlight the mountain we’ve still to climb to get anywhere close to gender equality.”
Girls Out Loud, which is passionate about inspiring and empowering teenage girls to find their voices, harness their self-belief and maximise their potential, works with schools across the North-West, offering early intervention programmes including ‘Big Sister’ mentoring programmes which has helped thousands of girls for over a decade. The programme also has the ear of thousands of women too, who step up to be mentors and role model advocates.
