Pancake Day drops in popularity? Just 18% of Brits celebrate at breakfast

Brits are struggling to find time to celebrate Pancake Day due to factors such as being too busy and tired, according to new national research revealed today1.

The survey, commissioned by Lyle’s Golden Syrup, explores how Brits celebrate Pancake Day and encourages families to say a wholehearted yes to Pancake Day, embracing the occasion with a golden start to the day.

Over half of Brits (57%) are planning to celebrate Pancake Day 2024 on February 13th, with almost three-quarters (72%) making their pancakes at home.

The research confirms sweet pancakes remain the favourite (63%) over savoury, with over two-fifths of Brits enjoying syrup on their pancakes (41%).

Yet despite these good intentions, two-fifths of Brits (41%) admit they are likely to be too tired or busy to celebrate when it comes to the end of the day, and only 18% will be starting their day off with pancakes for breakfast.

With more than 80% of Brits settling for regular breakfasts, Lyle’s Golden Syrup is bringing the fun back to the breakfast table, encouraging British families to enjoy little moments of pleasure by livening up their mornings with a drizzle of golden syrup.

This year, Lyle’s Golden Syrup has teamed up with actress and radio DJ Gemma Atkinson, to help families flip their days around for a Tuesday like no other, by starting Pancake Day with an absolutely golden disco.

Gemma has created a special ‘Absolutely Golden Hits’ playlist, filled with disco hits sure to have everyone dancing around the kitchen. It’s the perfect soundtrack to Pancake Day, helping families to start their day on a golden note.

Gemma Atkinson said: “As a mum of two, I know how hectic mornings can be. My daughter Mia’s just started school, so between her and my five-month-old, it can be hard to enjoy breakfast together as a family.

“I was thrilled with the chance to work with Lyle’s Golden Syrup and loved the idea of encouraging people to have a pancake disco at home. There’s nothing like bringing the whole family together for a tasty treat and a boogie, add a drizzle of golden syrup and it’s a magical way to start the day. I’m excited to help families across the UK celebrate Pancake Day with my Absolutely Golden Hits playlist, available to stream now.”

James Whiteley, Brand Director for Lyle’s Golden Syrup, said: “Pancake Day isn’t just about enjoying gloriously golden pancakes drizzled with Lyle’s Golden Syrup. It’s an activity for all the family to enjoy, creating time to bond and enjoy golden moments with your loved ones.

“We want to encourage families to make the most of this quality time by hosting their very own breakfast pancake disco. Working with Gemma was an easy decision, as a big music fan with a young family of her own, she’s the ideal person to soundtrack our morning.

“We look forward to seeing the UK flipping their pancakes, and their frowns, upside down, and enjoying Pancake Discos, bringing a touch of magic to kitchens up and down the country.”
