Modern motherhood is becoming increasingly noisy, with many UK mums struggling to find moments of peace at home. A new survey by Quiet Mark, the global certification programme for quieter living, reveals that nearly six in ten (59%) mothers say household noise leaves them feeling overwhelmed.

Quiet Mark’s Mother’s Day Noise Survey finds that –

97% of mums say that having quiet time is important to their overall wellbeing
44% of mums say that household noise impacts stress levels in the home
Over a quarter (27%) of mums say household noise disrupts sleep in the home
84% of parents think that a quieter home environment positively impacts their family’s well-being
The findings highlight how sound plays an increasingly important role in everyday wellbeing, particularly in busy family homes.

In today’s world, modern homes are filled with intrusive and constant background noise, from washing machines and kitchen appliances to televisions, traffic and digital devices. For many mothers balancing work, childcare and household responsibilities, finding quiet moments to relax and recharge can be difficult.

Poppy Szkiler, CEO and founder of Quiet Mark, said: “Motherhood today often unfolds against a constant backdrop of noise – from appliances and technology to the everyday activity of busy family life. What this research highlights is that noise isn’t simply a nuisance; it can have a real impact on how mothers feel in their own homes and on their overall wellbeing. When nearly half of mums say household noise contributes to their stress levels, it’s a reminder of how important it is to think about the sound environment we live in and to create spaces that allow moments of calm.”

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, the findings suggest that a moment of quiet may be one of the most meaningful gifts for British mothers this year, offering a rare chance to rest, recharge, and step away from the noise of everyday life.

Quiet Mark was established to provide a credible, independent certification that helps consumers easily identify quieter products for the home, workplace and public spaces. Its mission is to improve global health and wellbeing by reducing noise pollution through the identification and certification of the quietest appliances, technologies, and building materials to help create calmer environments where people can find moments of peace. Poppy Szkiler added: “At Quiet Mark, we see these results as an important reminder that sound is not just a technical issue – it is a wellbeing issue. Creating quieter living environments through thoughtful design and lower-noise appliances can help restore moments of calm, supporting healthier, more balanced homes for families.”
