Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has said the time has come for Wes Streeting to make his move, saying there is no by-election which Andy Burnham can win.

Speaking on GB News Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg said:

“Wes Streeting has a big decision to make but he has pushed this to the limit. He cannot now retreat without being ruined.

“If he doesn’t announce his candidature, it means he hasn’t got the numbers. If he hasn’t got the numbers, he is never going to be leader of the Labour Party.

“He must declare, and frankly, put the nation out of its misery, and then we can see if others come forward.

“Hanging on for Andrew Burnham is bonkers, because there is no by-election in the world that he can win. They would have to create a special constituency for him with only one voter, and he’d probably lose that. I mean, it is ridiculous Never-Never land.

“So they’ve got to crack on with it. Streeting is the man of the moment, he needs to say this to Starmer’s face tomorrow, and then we need to get on with having a leadership election and get some stability.

“And surely he’s got the 80 supporters by now, and we’re nearly 100 who say they haven’t got confidence in the prime minister. And very often of those 100, there’ll be many who don’t particularly mind who it is, as long as it’s somebody a little bit more credible than the current leader. They’re just desperate to get rid of Starmer.

“And then the letter signed by 100 saying they support Starmer. First of all, they don’t announce the names and then a number who were supposed to be supportive of it have said, well, wasn’t me.

“ So even his supporting effort is chaotic. Starmer’s finished, he’s just going to recognise this.

“I appreciate it’s difficult. I was in the bunker in the last hours of Boris, and I was very, very supportive of Boris. I would have liked him to go on and would have backed him if he’d chosen to do so.

“But Boris had the wit to realise that the game was up.”
