Referee Mark Clattenburg and OREO Tackle Britain’s Toughest Debates

When it comes to decision-making in life, almost half of Brits are bored (48%). And it’s no surprise when the average person is making a staggering 16 decisions a day – that’s a whopping 1.7 billion decisions each day as a nation.

In fact, Brits estimate that they spend approximately one hour 32 minutes each day making decisions – totalling roughly 23 days per year, resulting in the majority having decision fatigue (32%). Over half (58%) even go so far as to say they have ‘decision paralysis’ as they labour over the smallest things.

For many, decision-making feels mundane (35%), monotonous (29%) and tiring (20%), resulting in one in 10 (14%) even wishing someone else could make the decision for them. Some of the most mundane decisions include what to eat for dinner (39%), what to watch on TV (24%), what to wear in the morning (17%) and whether to clean the house (17%).

That’s why OREO has teamed up with the king of decision-making and debate settling, former Premier League referee and Gladiators adjudicator Mark Clattenburg, to launch the Trust the Twist service. The service will help the 74% of Brits who wish they could inject more fun, spontaneity (58%) and playfulness (56%) into their daily lives and 27% who want to break free of the daily grind.

Available to consumers through the OREO UKI Instagram channel, fans can submit everything from the daily decisions they are bored of making to the debates that are dividing their friends and family, and they’ll get the answer they’ve been looking for with a playful twist of an OREO – with the side of the creme revealing the winning answer.

The OREO ‘Trust the Twist’ service comes as Brits reveal the top 10 debates they are yet to settle with friends and family:
Is it called dinner or tea (14%)
Milk in tea before or after the water (13%)
Jam or cream first in a scone (12%)
Does pineapple belong on pizza (12%)
Is it better to be a morning person or a night owl (12%)
Cats or dogs (11%)
Should red sauce be kept in the fridge or the cupboard (9%)
Red or brown sauce (9%)
What came first the chicken or the egg (8%)
Are socks and sandals acceptable (7%)

Mark Clattenburg launched the service by hitting the streets of Devon to help tackle one of the greatest British debates —jam or cream first on a scone. Although the nation might be divided with 50% believing it is jam first and 24% believing it is cream, the OREO twist playfully revealed jam as the winner in the content that launched today.

As part of the research, 52% Brits even admit they often regret decisions or wonder if they should have settled for something else.

Some Brits are already turning to more playful means to make decisions or settle debates, with asking a friend (19%) or even flipping a coin (11%) to help add some much-needed excitement when trying to settle the score.

Mark Clattenburg, former football referee said: “I’m known for making decisions in high pressure tournaments, but everyday choices can often feel intense too, so it’s no surprise that 14% of Brits would like someone else to make the call for them. I can’t wait to see what questions we get from the British public with the OREO ‘Trust the Twist’ service. Whether it’s what to have for tea or what to get your partner for their birthday – hopefully we can add a bit of playfulness to the everyday with the twist of an OREO! ”

Sophia Burger, Brand Manager for OREO UK at Mondelēz International says: “Day to day life is stressful enough with all of the decisions we have to make. We know our fans have a lot of fun with the way they eat our iconic cookie from twisting to licking and just like the flip of a coin, the twist of an OREO can help to bring some fun to decision making and debating.”
