Revealed: The top trends which the nation wants to see make a comeback
MOTOWN, Mario Video Game, Scalextric and The Skinny Jean are the top trends which the nation wants to see make a comeback, a new study has revealed.
Tetris, The Denim Jacket, Monopoly, Leggings, Lego and R&B concludes the list of top ten trends* across toys, fashion, computer games and music categories that the nation feels most nostalgic towards.
A survey of 2,000 UK adults from One4all Favourites Gift Cards scratched under the superficial surface of the nations’ favourite trends, then and now, to find almost a quarter of UK adults (24%) feel nostalgic about their favourite trends from the past.
The survey also identified which music groups held the most influence over the nation’s favourite trends from yesteryear, revealing British pop-culture icons The Spice Girls (9%) share the top spot alongside American alternative rock-culture band, Nirvana (9%).
Britpop figureheads, Oasis (8%), known for their iconic 90’s fashion statements such as the ‘bucket hats’, the parkas and the polos, were voted the second most influential group.
However, it seems The Spice Girls are still inspiring British women today after bursting onto the scene with smoky eyes, curly hair, glossy lips, the bob and ‘bangs’, which were voted the top five favourite hair and beaty trends from the past.
Princess Diana (10%), Jennifer Anniston (10%), Madonna (7%), Rihanna (7%) and Beyonce (7%) were voted the top five females that most influenced the trends people followed.
While, Posh Spice’s other half, David Beckham (9%), led the style stakes of the top five males that most influenced Britain, closely followed by Johnny Depp (8%), Will Smith (8%), Brad Pitt (8%) and Liam Gallagher (5%).
Yet, more than half of the nation (52%) say they’re less likely to be influenced by current trends now, than when they were a teenager.
In addition, more than 1 in 10 (11%) parents say the trends they like are never the same as their children’s, with 1 in 10 parents also revealed that they struggle to stay up to date with the trends their children like.
Looking at the least favourite trends which the nation wants to see make a comeback, Easy Bake Ovens, over-plucked eyebrows, arm warmers, frosted tips and porcupine updos appeared top of the list.
Ties over tank tops, ultra-bright concealer, excessive blusher, Fall Guy game and matching tops with your other half completed the top ten of the least favourite trends amongst toys, fashion, beauty and gaming*.
Aoife Davey, Senior Marketing Director at One4all Favourites Gift Cards, comments on the findings: “The life cycle of a trend has the power to take you back to a certain point in time, to make you smile, or wince, but looking back at favourite past trends, purchases and fads through our own lifetime is always a fun exercise!
“A ‘then and now’ approach to gifting is a great way to problem-solve the perfect gift for a loved one. Thinking back to ‘then’, when you were that age, and the types of things you were passionate about – music, games, toys, or thinking of ‘now’ – what things you would most welcome in 2021. Trends come and go, but the thought behind a gift for a loved one is timeless so it’s great to pick something which is as unique as they are. Like, our One4all Favourites Gift Card range, which shows them you know their tastes and likes without jumping on the wrong trend-bandwagon!”
