The Mother’s Day Gift That Helps Mums Hold onto Precious Memories Forever

Most mums would say they’d love for time to pass a little slower, so they could hold onto the precious childhood years a bit longer! The Edinburgh Casting Studio’s DIY home casting kits are the perfect gift for mums who want to savour every moment of bringing up their babies.

For new mums

Baby Feet Casting Kit, £50: This gift is very special for mums who have welcomed a new addition to the family this year. Ideal for casting feet of babies 0-12 months, this kit creates two pairs of plaster baby feet, recording every wrinkle and the outlines of ten tiny toenails. In the years to come, both mum and child will marvel at just how small those newborn feet were!

For mums of older babies & toddlers

Little Hand Hold Kit, £45: This is an amazing gift for mums who would love to hold onto their little one’s podgy hand forever! Mum’s hand is cast, holding their baby or toddler’s hand in theirs. The gorgeous sculpture created shows the warmth and love shared between a mother and her young child, capturing baby’s vulnerability and mum’s role as protector and all-round superhero!

Mums of children and teens

Family Casting Kit, £70: Perfect for families of three or four, this kit is a wonderful way to celebrate the strength of a family unit. It’s a fun activity that brings parents and kids together – with no screens, and no distractions. There’s a sense of satisfaction in making something truly special!

Family Star Casting Kit, £99: This kit creates a beautiful star or wreath-shaped sculpture from the hands of up to eight family members. What a fab way to bring everyone together to create a personal and lasting keepsake of a supersized family’s unbreakable ‘circle of love’.

Easy, fun… and amazing results!

Each casting kit includes everything needed to carry out the casting, plus a booklet with step-by-step instructions. The Edinburgh Casting Studio’s special recipe moulding material is made from skin-safe, seaweed-based alginate, mixed with water. After plunging hands or feet into the gloopy pink jelly, it takes 2-3 minutes to set*. It’s ready when it turns from pink to white and feels rubbery to the touch.

Once hands or feet are wiggled free, it’s time to mix up stone powder and water, then pour into the mould. It takes a few minutes to rock ‘n’ roll the bucket to make sure the stone mixture gets into every nook and cranny. Afterwards, it takes 30 minutes for the stone to set. The bucket is then upturned and the mould released. Casters can then peel away alginate for the ‘Big Reveal’.

The Edinburgh Casting Studio’s casting kits create amazing, life-like casts, cloning the fine detail of rings, the creases of the skin, and the shape of fingernails. Like no other gift this Mother’s Day, they capture a moment in time, like a 3D selfie of the special love between mother and child.

*The casting process takes longer with the Family Star Casting Kit, as it’s necessary to strengthen the cast by applying layers of Modroc Plaster of Paris Bandage.

Life casting trend

Pippa Middleton did her bit to establish the life casting trend when she gifted a stunning silver cast of Prince George’s feet as a christening gift to Kate and Will; and Stella McCartney, Tamara Ecclestone and Tamara Beckwith are among many other celebs who have commissioned casts, from life casting specialist Wrightson & Platt, to celebrate their growing families and hold onto beautiful memories forever.

The Edinburgh Casting Studio started selling its DIY home casting kits, handmade with love in Scotland, to make the body casting trend accessible to all! Instead of splashing out thousands on a bespoke piece in bronze or silver, its home casting kits are available for a fraction of the price, creating stunning, detailed plaster casts in under an hour.
