24th April – 4th May marks the return of British Cider Week, and there has never been a better time to find YOUR cider.
As the world’s largest producer and consumer of cider, the UK has long had a love affair with this apple-based drink. In fact, recent research shows that Brits spend over £3.17 Billion on cider every year.[1]
Not only loved for its heritage and tradition, the flavour and profile of cider is hugely popular with Brits as a new wave of consumers continue to explore the remarkable diversity of British cider and the many occasions to enjoy it. In a recent study, when asked to compare to other alcoholic drinks that surveyed consumers usually drink cider came out on top in terms of flavour, quality and value for money[2].
From bottle-fermented sparkling dry ciders served at celebrations, to premium flavoured options in bars, vintage ciders paired with Sunday roasts, and low- & no-alcohol styles enjoyed at lunch, there truly is a cider for every taste and every moment.
British Cider Week returns this month, offering the perfect opportunity to celebrate this iconic drink and discover something new. Across the UK, cider makers both large and small are crafting an exciting range of styles just waiting to be explored.
So, how should Brits celebrate?
Cider Dining
Cider isn’t just for sipping on its own, it’s a fantastic partner at the dining table. Like wine, it enhances flavours and elevates the overall experience.
Cheese is perhaps cider’s closest companion, from a sharp West Country Cheddar to a creamy Camembert. It also pairs beautifully with ham, sausages, pork pies, and roast pork. For a modern twist, dry and medium ciders work perfectly with Indian and South-Asian cuisine such as rich chicken curries. Cider also has a place at the top table of fine dining. Sparkling dry ciders in particular work brilliantly with seafood.
Orchard Blossom Walks
Late April marks the peak of orchard blossom, often described as the “snow of the West Country.” This is the perfect time to visit orchards, experience their beauty firsthand, and see where cider begins.
Cider Tastings & Events
From craft ciders to well-known brands, cider makers across the UK are hosting tap takeovers, meet-the-maker sessions, and cellar door tastings throughout the week. A full programme of events can be found on the British Cider Week Website https://britishciderweek.org.uk/
