Three newly recruited police constables, each with different motivations and backgrounds, embark on a three-year tour of duty in Palestine in the mid-1930s, as the British colonial authorities struggle to contain an uprising by the local Arab population. Sam, a young man seeking adventure, Spud, a freewheeling Eastender, and Jack, with a background in higher education and the arts, are thrown together as violence intensifies against the British forces of law and order.

The three recruits witness first-hand the struggle for land and rights in British Mandate Palestine, while being obliged to participate in British efforts to crush the Arab rebellion and restore order.

At such a dangerous time, will the three constables emerge unscathed from their experiences? What will they discover about land, homes, and livelihoods—the issues at the core of the still-unsolved question of Palestine? And why on earth has Jack, an artist at heart, chosen to become a policeman?

Richard Fassam-Wright is a writer of historical fiction. Following the publication of his first novel, A Moscow Awakening, he has once again drawn upon his professional background as a senior EU and UN official to write a second novel, set in 1930s Palestine. Richard uses detailed archival research to provide an authentic backdrop for his fictional work and is currently working on his third novel. Richard explains: “Two of the main areas on which I worked in my professional life at the EU and UN were Russia (the subject of my first book ‘A Moscow Awakening’) and Palestine, the subject of my second book, ‘The Triangle of Death’. The themes in ‘The Triangle of Death’ are highly relevant today in that they address issues of homes, livelihoods and land ownership which are, in essence, the same issues underlying the perennial dispute between Jews and Arabs over the land in Palestine which pertain to this day. The 1930s were in many ways a prelude of what was to emerge after the second world war when a fully-fledged war took place between Jews and Arabs in 1948 leading to the expulsion of 750,000 Arabs from their homes in what became Israel. My book seeks to look at this issue from all sides, most notably from the experiences of the three central characters of the book who are British Constables recruited to maintain law and order against the backdrop of a violent uprising by Palestinian Arabs against the gradual takeover of their land.”
