SHADOW Defence Secretary James Cartlidge has described President Trump’s actions over Greenland as “unacceptable”.

He told GB News: “The way that Denmark deals with a threat is that Denmark is part of NATO, along with ourselves and along with the United States, that that Alliance was formed precisely because of the threat from Russia, the North Atlantic Treaty.

“I think there’s cross party agreement in Britain on this. What he’s proposing is unacceptable, both in terms of the claim on Greenland and in terms of then using tariffs to potentially punish countries who stand up to him on it. So I very much regret the position we’re in.

“It’s worth remembering that after 9/11, that’s the only time article five of NATO has ever been used, and it was used by the United States and for other NATO countries to come to their mutual aid, which we did. And fighting in Afghanistan, where, of course, we lost many, many troops. Denmark had the highest per capita losses.

“So we’re all allies together, and it’d be much better if we stood together as allies instead of resorting to these kinds of proposals.”

On the defection to Reform of Andrew Rosindell MP, he said: “I’m disappointed that Andrew Rosindell has defected, but that’s his choice. I respect him for that, if he wishes to join another party, then so be it.

“From my point of view, I actually think Kemi has shown amazing leadership in recent weeks, not just over the way she sacked Robert Jenrick and dealt with that very high profile defection, as you say earlier, but at the same time, she’s been setting out some really positive policies on the economy, this key area where, at the moment.

“The country, let’s be honest, is not doing particularly well under Labour, because when all is said and done, and I’m not one of those who think that Britain is broken, it’s got big challenges. What we need are answers. The public out there don’t want to see politicians just whingeing about this and in-fighting, and what Kemi rightly said was the psychodrama.

“They want to see us standing united, and the Conservatives will be stronger and more united after this has passed, in my view, and we’ll keep coming out with those strong policies to show Britain how there is a positive choice to Labour. Kemi is now really well placed to do that.”
