TV psychologist Emma Kenny to share her top tips ahead of the return to school
Back to school anxiety is a common feeling amongst parents with school children. The demands of a busy school year and keeping track of the growing list of things to remember, purchase and organise can be overwhelming for many.
To help ease the burden of back-to-school anxiety for parents, Ryman has partnered with popular TV psychologist Emma Kenny to share her top tips ahead of the return to school.
Emma offers the following tips to help parents manage back-to-school anxiety:
1. Plan Ahead: Start preparing a few weeks in advance. Create a checklist of everything needed, from school supplies to important dates.
2. Establish Routines: Gradually reintroduce school routines, such as bedtime and waking hours, to ease the transition.
3. Use Technology Wisely: Leverage WhatsApp groups to stay updated and share information with other parents. Set reminders for important dates and tasks.
4. Communicate Openly: Talk to your children about their fears and anxieties. Validate their feelings and offer reassurance.
5. Stay Organised: Keep a family calendar in a central location. Mark all important dates and deadlines to avoid last-minute rushes.
6. Encourage Independence: Teach children to pack their bags and prepare their uniforms the night before. This reduces morning stress.
7. Build a Support Network: Connect with other parents to share tips, concerns, and support. Knowing you’re not alone can alleviate anxiety.
8. Practice Relaxation Techniques: Encourage mindfulness, deep breathing, or other relaxation techniques to manage stress for both you and your children.
9. Stay Positive: Focus on the positives of the new school year, such as new opportunities and friendships. A positive outlook can be contagious.
10. Involve Your Child: Encouraging your child to be part of the planning process can be advantageous. This can include setting up their school calendar, organising their study area, or even selecting their own school supplies.
