UWL alumnus Lee John-Charles CBE awarded honorary doctorate from UWL

The University of West London (UWL) has awarded Lee John-Charles CBE an Honorary Doctor of Laws for his work to inspire and equip students at the University’s School of Law.

Barrister and UWL alumnus Lee was previously a senior lawyer in the UK Civil Service’s Government Legal Department, holding roles including Senior Lawyer, Head of the UK Home Office and Immigration Division and Acting Head of Litigation. He is now working as a Senior Consultant Legal Director and is currently involved in several public inquiries including the Covid-19 Inquiry.

Lee has 30 years of litigation expertise and experience and was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2021 Birthday Honours List for services to law and diversity. During his career, he was involved in extensive public and private law, inquiries, and inquests, dealing with some of the UK government’s most high-profile cases.

Additionally, Lee is an accredited mediator, mental health first aider, and has also lectured in Law. He was a course trainer on Diversity and Inclusion in Action while working for the Government Legal Department and actively supported initiatives to improve access to the legal profession for underrepresented communities. Lee has also delivered motivational talks at careers events.

As he presented Lee with his award, Head of the School of Law Philip Ells said, “Lee has been a regular attendee at UWL for many years, impressing upon students the need for good lawyers in government and other forms of legal practice. The School of Law is delighted to be associated with him and looks forward to continuing to work with him in the future.”

“For those of you about to embark on your career or postgraduate study in addition to continuing to work hard and being a team player, you need to dream big,” said Lee to the graduands. “Do not be stubborn, be flexible. If an opportunity comes your way, take it.

“Get yourself a mentor. The best way to learn is from somebody who has the expertise and experience and knows you, your qualities, strengths, and weaknesses and gives you constructive feedback as you embark on your career journey.”
