York Dungeons celebrates 35th anniversary by offering free entry to lucky customers!

To celebrate 35 years since the York Dungeons opened its doors, the city’s spookiest attraction is gifting lucky visitors whose birthdays fall on Bonfire Night (November 5th) free entry to the site.

After allowing guests from across the world to explore York’s deepest and darkest history since 1986, the York Dungeons is offering a special treat to mark the day which saw the infamous Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot unfold.

The famed English conspirator and figurehead of the plot to blow up Westminster was born in York back in 1570 and has featured heavily in the Dungeon’s storylines throughout its 35-year history.

Visitors born on November 5th will be able to meet the historical mischief maker, or what’s left of him at least, for free as long as they can provide evidence of their birth date.

That’s not all… as the local Town Crier will be in attendance to officially open the Dungeons on this (in)famous day, with Guy Fawkes in tow to serenade the birthday guests with a rendition of “Happy Birthday”.

Tourists can remember, remember the 5th of November as they delve deep in the Dungeons to visit York’s most famous villain, Guy Fawkes, who will be waiting to tell guests all about his past, from schoolboy, to soldier, to conspirator.

Guests will also be introduced to Guy Fawkes’ school friend, John Wright, who was also part of the Gunpowder Plot. The pair will tell visitors about why the plot failed, who the conspirators were and what happened to Guy Fawkes once he was caught (spoiler alert: it’s not pretty).

The York Dungeons experience also allows peasants to venture into Viking York, explore the Torture Chamber and visit one of the UK’s most haunted pubs, the Golden Fleece!

Mark Mattinson, General Manager of The York Dungeons, said: “Guy Fawkes is perhaps the most infamous character to have walked the streets of our historic city. So, as the UK remembers him and his crimes on the 5th November, we thought what better way to celebrate our 35th birthday than inviting those who were born on that date into the Dungeon for free!

“Over the past 35 years we have thoroughly enjoyed frightening all of our wonderful guests and we cannot wait continue to do so long into the future. The York Dungeons has become one of the city’s must-see attractions, and we believe it is the best place to uncover all of York’s darkest secrets”.

Special guests who gain free access to the Dungeon on the 5th November, will be booked onto the next available tour after providing proof of their birthday.
