Brits are racing to clean, repair, and move home as warmer weather triggers a nationwide home improvement surge according to new data from Gumtree.
After months of winter slowdown, households are acting fast to tackle delayed jobs driving increased interest across key services and signalling an early start to the summer home improvement season.
Gumtree data comparing winter to spring shows demand rising across top categories:
Cleaning services up 240% with more than 315,000 searches
Removal services leading demand, hitting 822,000 searches, up 166%
Handyman services up 160% with 250,000 searches
Painting and decorating has climbed 140% generating over 157,000 searches
Regional Hotspots Driving the Surge
When it comes to getting homes summer ready, major cities are driving demand where competition for tradespeople is intensifying.
London leads the moving rush, with over 200,000 searches for removal services and direct requests up 770%
Edinburgh is Britain’s cleaning hotspot, with demand for cleaners seeing an 800% surge
Birmingham and Bradford are experiencing a decorating boom, up 221% and 271% respectively
Birmingham and Leeds are leading handyman demand, both up 200%
The surge reflects a seasonal shift in behaviour, with homeowners using spring as a trigger to prepare their homes for moving house, hosting and socialising as well as renovating or refreshing spaces.
Gumtree responds to rising demand
But with demand rising faster than supply in some areas, finding a reliable tradesperson is becoming increasingly competitive.
To help tackle this, Gumtree has introduced a series of enhancements designed to make hiring tradespeople faster, easier and more transparent.
These include a simplified booking experience, improved job request forms plus additional trust features such as integrated reviews and identity verification helping users connect with reliable local professionals more quickly.
Sahil Lamba, Services Expert at Gumtree said: “Booking a tradesperson has often felt like a leap of faith, especially during peak periods.
With demand building earlier this year, those who leave it too late may struggle to secure availability. Planning ahead is key.
We’ve focused on making the process quicker, clearer and more transparent, so people can hire with confidence even as competition increases.”
Gumtree now hosts over 800,000 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.8/5, helping users choose with confidence.
Whether you’re navigating a move in London, redecorating in Birmingham, or just need a deep clean in Edinburgh, getting the jobs done has never been easier with Gumtree.
