The survey of 2,000 UK dog owners commissioned by Chef & Brewer has uncovered insights into the pub habits of Britain’s favourite four-legged friends – from the breeds most likely to join their owners for a pint and the behaviours that make them stand out, to what amenities dog owners value most when choosing a post-walk pub pit stop.

When looking at pub-loving pup trends across the country, dog owners in Nottingham most frequently take their dogs to the pub above anyone in UK, with almost a quarter (24%) visiting weekly or more, followed by London at 20%, Manchester at 19% and Birmingham and Brighton at 18%, respectively.

Chef & Brewer has published an online map of where you’re most likely to bump into a pooch at the pub, available here https://www.chefandbrewer.com/humble-bumblings/pawsome-pub-guide. It includes the top pub-loving breeds by region, complete with the quirks that set local dogs apart, along with the top five Chef & Brewer dog friendly pubs with walking routes best suited to different four-legged personalities.

What do dogs and their owners in Britain love the most about their local?

37% of Brits say dog-friendly facilities such as treats, water bowls and puppuccinos are the biggest draw
While Brighton dog owners (48%) prioritise treats on the menu, Sheffield locals (38%) want spacious gardens
A cosy atmosphere matters too, with 26% of dog owners citing it as key – rising to 31% in the East Midlands
Almost half (49%) of English Springer Spaniels love interacting with new people, while 40% of Mini Dachshunds prefer a cosy nap under the table
Rottweilers are the UK’s most social dogs, with 45% playing and socialising with other dogs every time they visit a pub
In Yorkshire, 46% of dogs love going to the pub purely because they enjoy being part of a family outing
As autumn marks peak countryside walk season, the research also explored how different breeds enjoy the great outdoors. On countryside walks, Border Collies (59%) rank as the UK’s most energetic walkers, while Miniature Schnauzers (30%) prefer a gentler pace. Regionally, over a fifth (22%) of dogs in the North West prefer shorter, slower routes, compared to almost half (49%) of Northern Irish dogs who love long runs.

The research also highlights the bond between owners and their pets: two in five (41%) dog owners say their pup is part of the family and belongs at the pub with them, rising to 50% among Greater London dog owners. One in five (21%) Brits say their dog gets excited as soon as they arrive at the pub – especially Bulldogs (38%), who are the most excitable breed.

William Botterill, Head of Integrated Marketing at Chef & Brewer, said:
“Dogs make pubs happier places and it’s clear from the new research that dogs love their locals as much as we love having them there. It’s not just little pups who enjoy snuggling by our fireside pub seats, with bigger breeds like German Shepherds and Bulldogs named amongst the most regular pub-going pups, so we need to cater for all sizes. We recognise the joy that dogs bring to our guests, which is why we treat them like the VIPs (Very Important Pups) they are. From fresh water bowls and treats, to cosy corners perfect for post countryside-walk snoozing, our pubs are designed to make every dog and owner feel welcome.”
