HOMEBUILDER RAMPS UP SUPPORT OF WARRINGTON SCOUT GROUP

Barratt Homes recently donated £2,000 to a scout group in Cheshire as a contribution towards a new access ramp at its facility to provide greater convenience for its members.

The 21st Warrington West Scouts received the grant from the leading housebuilder, which has gone towards the construction of the ramp to replace some steep steps from the adjacent car park, to provide wheelchair access.

Barratt Homes’ donation came as part of the Barratt Developments Plc Charitable Foundation, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.

Stephen Cummings, Group Scout Leader at 21st Warrington West Scouts, said: “Scouting is one of the largest youth movements in the UK and around the world, with nearly 500,000 members in the UK and 25 million globally. It actively engages and supports young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.

“The ramp will ensure we are fully accessible for all future members.”

As 21st Warrington West (1st Appleton) Scouts, which formed in 1965, it is one of 29 groups across Warrington. It accommodates Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and is also host to Explorer Scouts and two groups of Guides.

Stephen added: “Adults running the Group are all volunteers and give their time and effort to support the girls and boys in the different age groups learn skills for life, whilst having fun and adventure.

“It’s extremely important for businesses and organisations to donate to local groups, such as ourselves. We help build and maintain local communities, and are involved in many local activities such as Stretton Walking Day, Appleton Thorn Bawming the Thorn, and St George’s and Remembrance Day services.”

The group was presented with a challenge during the pandemic as face-to-face scouting was cancelled, so it made use of Zoom meetings and activities were provided for members to complete at home.

The volunteers kept in close contact with its members to support them. Membership was maintained and the group even had new recruits whose first few months were all through online meetings.

Stephen added: “The future for Scouting remains strong nationally and in Appleton. We are a well-established group, and the growing housing in the area brings potential new youth members and – we hope – some adult volunteers to grow the Group.

“Volunteers can help in many ways based on their interests and abilities – from helping to run a section, to being a trainer for a particular activity or skill, to working with the Group charity trustees. They can also provide background support through website management, and building maintenance. We can find roles for everyone!”

Rhys Nicholson, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “We understand how scout groups can create a powerful sense of unity and inclusion, and it was our pleasure to contribute to the 21st Warrington West Scouts to support the excellent work it’s doing in the town.

“The work that the group carries out is of extreme importance for local families and we are thrilled our donation has helped provide wheelchair-friendly access at the facility.”

Having fundraised for several years, the scout group were able to access the £20,000 required for the access ramp, thanks to the support from a variety of organisations in the local community.
