The nation’s most haunted postcodes come with a 33% house price premium

The latest research by mortgage experts, Revolution Brokers, reveals that houses in the nation’s most haunted postcodes command an average price premium of 33%.

The research identifies some of the most notorious haunted houses across the nation and then compares the average house price in each relevant postcode area to the overall national average to calculate the haunted price premium.

The average house price in England & Wales is currently £310,716 while the average for the most haunted locations is 33% higher at £412,683.

If you go to the TW10 postcode area in Surrey, you’ll find Ham House, a property haunted by the ghost of a woman in black. Rumour even has it that one of the mirrors in the home is haunted, too. To live near this spooky spot will cost you an average of £912,308.

In the TN27 postcode area of Ashford, Kent, there’s a ghoulish place called Pluckley Village. It’s a small village haunted by as many as 12 ghosts including a highwayman who they say was murdered and pinned to a tree and a suicidal headmaster who hung himself. The average price for a home in this area is £592,092.

The terrifying Berry Pomeroy Castle is located in Devon’s TQ9 postcode area where the average house price is £504,431. Legend has it that the castle is haunted by two female spirits – the Blue Lady and the White Lady, the latter of which is believed to be the spirit of Margaret Pomeroy, who was imprisoned in the castle and is said to haunt the dungeons to this day.

Not too far away in Dorset’s BH20 postcode area is Corfe Castle where a female spirit haunts the corridors having been killed in the castle as punishment for an act of treason. The average house price in this spooky area is £491,233.

In the GL12 postcode area of Gloucestershire is the Ancient Ram Inn built on two keylines that can be traced all the way back to Stonehenge. It is, therefore, rife with scary activity. If that’s your bag, it’ll cost an average of £490,646 to live nearby.

In Yorkshire’s YO1 postcode area, the average house price is £390,248. It’s also home to the haunted Treasurer’s House.

Blythburgh Church is haunted by a massive hellhound in Suffolk’s IP19 postcode area where houses cost £383,851.

Carmarthenshire’s SA19 is home to the haunted Newton House and an average house price of £365,038, while to live near Buckland Abbey in Devon’s PL20 it’ll cost £364,407.

Blickling Hall in Norwich’s NR11 is believed to be haunted by the headless ghost of Anne Boleyn. If you’d like to live close by, it’ll cost an average of £360,977.

“We have a long history of being fascinated by ghost stories and haunted houses – perhaps that’s why the price premium is so high for these ghostly locations?

Or perhaps these ghosts simply had a good head for property investment, and chose to live in parts of the country where house prices were set to get higher and higher?

My advice would be, if you ever come across a ghost, ask for its property advice because they clearly know what they’re doing.”
