MY BEATING HEART NORTHERN SUPERGROUP PRESENT WORLD CUP ANTHEM… “COME ON ENGLAND” (YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT)”

From “World In Motion” to “Three Lions”, some of the nation’s greatest football songs have grown from Northern roots…
And ahead of the Fifa World Cup 2022 – MY BEATING HEART – a collective of top Mancunian musicians have come together to produce an empowering new anthem and charity single:
“COME ON ENGLAND (YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT)”.

Released on 18 November 2022, the Friday before England’s first World Cup clash against Iran, this rousing new track arrives with an official video, which is available to watch now.

Written to coincide with the Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar, “Come On England (You Better Believe It)” is a full-blooded football anthem to spur on our Lions, from the pubs of Britannia to the terraces of Qatar.

Written by Nigel Carr (Louder Than War) and made with some familiar faces, it sees the musician, presenter and journalist providing the nation with a brand new football song that beats with a courageous chorus, a motivational spirit and a kindness of heart.

Like the greatest ambitions, “Come on England (You Better Believe It)” originally came to Nigel in a dream. Determined to capture the magic before it dissipated, he ran downstairs and finished the song on his trusty Yamaha. Soon catching the attention of acclaimed Pop and Rock producer Mike Bennett (whose credits include Toyah Willcox, Ian Brown, The Specials, Emerson Lake & Palmer and Fat White Family), the pair began hatching plans to make Nigel’s dream a reality and in time for the November World Cup.

Speaking about “Come On England…” and his hopes for the single, Nigel Carr says:

“The song is a lament from a football fan, full of hope and roaring ambition, while recognising the long wait every fan has endured over the years. Come on England (You Better Believe It) recognises the incredible inspiration provided by the England Women’s football team, where, after ‘the Lions’ line, they are referred to as ‘The Esses’. The powerful chorus is both uplifting and inspirational. ‘Nothing Can Stop Us Now, You Better Believe It – Come on England, a proper terrace chant!”

Assembling a collective of respected musicians from around the Greater Manchester area and beyond, the track is performed by the mighty My Beating Heart. A makeshift supergroup of sorts, it features powerhouse vocals from celebrated Manc diva Melanie Williams (Hacienda Classical/Sub Sub), plus music by members of many celebrated bands including John Robb (The Membranes/Goldblade), Si Wolstencroft (The Fall), Craig Gannon (The Smiths), David Gleave (Gustaffson/The Naughty Boys), Jay Stapely (Roger Waters Band/Suede), and many others.

The song’s roaring backing vocals arrive courtesy of the Chorlton High School Choir (based in South Manchester), whilst further vocal oomph comes from Jerrelle Clayton-McKenzie, Coral Roberts, Ian Carr, and the song’s co-producer Mike Bennett. Additional production and mixing was provided by Pete Gleadall (musical director for The Pet Shop Boys).

Beaming about My Beating Heart and especially lead-vocalist Melanie Williams’ contribution to the project, co-producer Mike Bennett says:

“Melanie is a genius, not just a singer, but a vocal acrobat and artist. As soon as she heard the song, she not only got behind the microphone to add her magic but had the vision to pick up on Nigel’s vision of a school choir (School’s Out, Another Brick in The Wall) and arranged for the Chorlton High School Choir to sing on the track. She has absolutely made the record as far as I’m concerned, not just because of her own brilliant talent but her tenacity and passion.”

Like the perfect corner that sets up that winning goal, “Come on England (You Better Believe It)” lands three-days before England’s first World Cup tie in Qatar and is destined to boost the hopes and dreams of a nation who believe our Lions can go all the way.

Released on 18th November on all streaming platforms, proceeds from the My Beating Heart project will be in aid of Child Bereavement UK.
