New study reveals Londoners are some of the most spied on citizens in the world

A new study by WebsiteToolTester has analysed where in the world people are watched by their governments the most, both online and offline.

Throughout the world, the number of surveillance cameras has increased dramatically with nearly 1 billion cameras watching your every move, and online life is just as monitored, with governments around the globe requesting the personal data gathered online for millions of citizens in one year alone.

The UK takes 3rd place for the most-watched country, with the majority of the spying being done in London, where there are 627,707 security cameras alone. That works out as 1 CCTV camera for every 16 citizens in the capital, and the government has made attempts to get 117,848 citizens personal data over the course of a year.

The study analysed where in the world people were being watched the most, by calculating the number of CCTV cameras per citizen in the biggest cities, and the number of attempts made by governments to gain their citizen’s personal data from Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter. So who is the most-watched?

The UK is the third most-watched country in the WORLD ?️

It’s no surprise that China takes the number 1 spot, with 15,880,491 security cameras in major cities spying on its citizens – this works out as more than one camera for every citizen in cities such as Shanghai. They also requested 94,866 citizens data from Apple alone while they forbid the use of Google and other sites, monitoring online action with their government-owned alternatives. The USA takes second place for watching its civilians with 112,206 security cameras, averaging two cameras for every 10 people in its major cities, contradicting its title of being the leader of the free world. They made a huge amount of data requests amounting to 800,196!
