Ring Video Doorbells are capturing heartwarming moments as robins land on Christmas wreaths across the UK, delighting families and connecting them to centuries of festive folklore.

Mark Tappenden from Harlow heard his Ring device alert early one morning and discovered footage of a robin perched on the family’s wreath. “All the family and friends loved watching it,” said Mark, “My sister said it was our mum visiting, as she passed away quite a number of years ago.”

The sighting taps into centuries-old British folklore. Robins landing on wreaths are traditionally believed to symbolise good luck, renewal, and hope for the year ahead—with many considering them messengers from deceased loved ones during winter months.

Mark isn’t alone. Tim Grindell from Harrow, London, captured a robin visiting his wreath three separate times. “I was working at home at the time and sent it to my wife and family. This included my father-in-law who’s an avid birdwatcher and Swindon town fan (their nickname is The Robins). The robin came back twice since too.”

Dr Clare Jonas, research communication and researcher development specialist, explains the phenomenon: “The robin is a common yet special sight in our gardens, especially in winter. Spotting a robin is believed to bring messages of hope, renewal, and remembrance of loved ones during the colder months. If you have good-luck superstitions like these, research shows that experiencing one could even boost your confidence and help you achieve your goals.”

How to capture your own robin footage:
Ring suggests positioning wreaths carefully so they don’t obstruct the camera’s view, and removing excess baubles for clearer shots. The company’s AI-powered Smart Video Search feature, released earlier this year to Premium subscribers, allows users to search their Ring Event History for specific moments – simply type ‘birds’ to locate relevant clips without scrolling manually.
