JUSTICE FOR CAMMELL LAIRD EVENT TO BE HELD AT LABOUR CONFERENCE

In 1984, 37 shipyard workers began an official strike in protest at job cuts and working conditions.

The workers – some of whom have since died – where imprisoned in a category A jail for 30 days.

They were also dismissed from their jobs and had all their redundancy and pension rights taken away.

The Cammell Laird workers, their families and GMB Union have been fighting for justice for more than three decades.

Speakers at the event include Eddie Marnell, one of the Cammell Laird 37 and Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary.

Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, said:

“The gross injustice suffered by the Cammell Laird 37 is a stain on British history.

“These workers were treated like hardened criminals instead of workers taking industrial action to protect their jobs.

“They were robbed of their livelihoods and their freedom.

“GMB will never stop fighting for justice for Cammell Laird.”
