Navigating the indulgent food, drink and celebrations Christmas brings while on a health, wellness or weight management journey can be exhausting and unsustainable, with many women already conjuring up an extensive plan to stay on track with their goals throughout
December.

But according to TV nutritionist, weight management expert and SlimFast Brand Ambassador Dr Kate Llewellyn-Waters, one of the biggest mistakes women make is trying to completely overhaul their lifestyle overnight.

The nutrition guru says depriving yourself is rarely the answer and believes wellness should never come at the expense of missing out on life’s most precious moments.

Dr Kate, presenter and broadcaster, best known for presenting Channel 5’s You Are What You Eat, says her best-kept secret when setting achievable health and wellness goals is taking small, simple, sustainable steps to make committing to them a breeze.

“A lot of women fall into the trap of trying to do too much at once, particularly in the lead up to the festive period,” says Dr Kate.

“They try to overhaul absolutely everything overnight, which is totally unsustainable and overwhelming. Deprivation leads to a lack of consistency, before these goals are neglected altogether.

“One simple strategy I swear by is habit stacking, which is the practice of attaching a healthy behaviour to an existing daily routine.

“Rather than embarking on a drastic pre-Christmas health overhaul, I recommend women focus on realistic changes that are easy to commit to and fit seamlessly into your lifestyle with little effort.

“This could be something as simple as adding more protein to your breakfast. For example, one scoop of SlimFast’s Protein Plus Fibre adds 21g of protein to your diet and can be stirred into overnight oats, mixed through Greek yoghurt or blended into your morning
smoothie.

“You can choose from deliciously fruity Raspberry Ripple flavour, or indulgent Caramel Cookie if you’re looking for a real treat to start your day.”

“I also encourage women to have a cup of chamomile tea before bed, as it’s incredibly calming and helps you to wind down before you sleep. While enjoying my tea, I practice gratitude, reminding myself of three things that happened during my day that I’m grateful
for.

“The healthiest habits are rarely the most dramatic or disruptive, they’re the ones that fit effortlessly into real life.

“SlimFast’s new wellness range is the perfect companion for anyone building small, sustainable, healthy habits. It’s all about smarter wellness, made simple.”

According to Dr Kate, habit stacking works effectively because it removes the unnecessary pressure of trying to completely reinvent your lifestyle overnight. She says small actions, repeated every day, are far more effective than making huge changes that become
impossible to maintain.

“This mindset is all the more important during the festive season, when many women feel torn between wanting to stay on track and the desire to indulge in the festivities,” she says.

“Whether you’re looking forward to Christmas, have a birthday coming up or another type of celebration, it’s important to allow yourself to go and enjoy the special occasions where you make your memories.”

Rather than avoiding parties or depriving yourself of festive treats altogether, Dr Kate encourages women to focus on balance.

She explains that starting the day with a satisfying, high-protein breakfast and staying hydrated throughout the day can help you maintain your health and wellness goals while enjoying the festive celebrations.

Refreshingly, she says that if you do indulge and fall off track, you shouldn’t worry – simply resume your healthy habits when the festivities are over.

“Don’t stress and certainly don’t feel guilty!” she says.

“Enjoy yourself, then get back on track when it feels realistic and sustainable.”

Dr Kate’s advice comes as wellness goals continue to evolve beyond simply chasing a dress size or obsessing over a number on the scales.

“Wellness goals have changed massively over the last decade,” she says. “It’s more about health now, and how we can improve our overall wellbeing.

“Achieving your long-term health goals is all about consistency, not chasing perfection.”
