New homes developments under construction may look like exciting places to explore for youngsters, but pupils at a school in Berkshire have helped David Wilson Homes to share important messages about site safety.

As St Gabriel’s School is close to David Wilson Homes’ Newbury Racecourse and Donnington Heights developments in Newbury, the housebuilder developed site safety videos to teach the children to stay away from the dangerous environments ahead of the summer holidays.

After watching the videos, the pupils took part in a site safety poster competition to share what they’d learned about being safe on construction sites.

Five winners were chosen by David Wilson Homes for the most colourful and informative entries, and the developer awarded book tokens and Site Safety Stars certificates to pupils Helena Bunce, Connie Hornsey, Nieve McLellan, Sofia Judd and Scarlett Rimmer, all aged 10.

Peter Dove, Head of the Junior School at St Gabriel’s, said: “Having watched the video which highlighted key dangers on construction sites, our pupils were able to quickly spot hazards and explain why they could be fatal.

“Our pupils will remember these points and the videos will support them to continue to make sensible choices when choosing where to play during the summer months. We were very proud of our children’s mature and sensible responses to the videos.”

David Wilson Homes’ site safety videos were created for children in Reception through to Year 6, and have been sent to schools close to its sites up and down the country.

The homebuilder created the videos to teach the children the same important lessons they would learn on a supervised site visit.

Campbell Gregg, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Southern, said: “We have a number of families settling down at our developments in Newbury, so it’s important we highlight the dangers of building sites with school children from an early age.

“It’s our responsibility to make children aware of the hazards, and we’re very grateful to the pupils at St Gabriel’s School for helping us raise awareness of site safety. We’d like to congratulate the winners on their fantastic poster designs.”
